About Comcast Xfinity

Xfinity is the umbrella brand that Comcast Cable Communications, LLC uses to brand the internet, cable television, home telephone and wireless services provided by the company. The company rebranded their offerings, playing down the Comcast branding of the services, due to the negative view of the brand name held by many customers.

The company’s digital cable offering was rebadged as “Xfinity TV,” their home phone service is now dubbed “Xfinity Voice” and their high-speed internet service is now named “Xfinity Internet.”

Comcast is the largest provider of cable internet access in the United States, serving nearly half of the country’s internet users, with over 25.1 million high-speed internet customers as of April 2017.

Like many other cable internet and television providers, Xfinity enjoys the enviable position of being the only internet provider available in many of their markets. While television viewers can go with over-the-air, DirecTV, Dish or other options, internet users are mostly locked into using Xfinity if they want access to double and triple digit internet speeds.

The provider also operates a network of public Wi-Fi hotspots for Xfinity internet subscribers, known as Xfinity Wi-Fi. The network consists of hotspots installed in homes and businesses, who share their Wi-Fi access on an opt-out basis. Xfinity users have access to these hotspots wherever they are available.

Why Do You Need a VPN for Comcast Xfinity?

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) routes your internet connection through an encrypted tunnel, which protects your personal data and online activities from the prying eyes of hackers, the government and even your Internet Service Provider (ISP), Comcast Xfinity. (ISPs are now allowed to sell information about your online meanderings to advertisers so they can better target online ads.)

How Does a VPN Work

Comcast Xfinity has also been known to throttle the connection of their users who access certain online streaming services, such as Netflix. A VPN protects your connection, so Xfinity can’t tell which services you’re accessing, so they can’t throttle you based on your activities.

In addition, a VPN is a great way to access streaming content, online games and other services that wouldn’t normally be available in your location due to geographical or government restrictions. A VPN can make your connection appear to be coming from another location, enabling access to content in that area of the world.

Choosing the Best VPN for Use With Xfinity

When selecting a VPN provider to keep your online antics undercover from the prying eyes of Xfinity and others, you’ll want to keep in mind a good number of considerations. While you could make use of each provider’s free trial and test them yourself, there is no need to go to that extreme.

In this section, I’ll cover each category you should consider and also provide a ranking of how well my top 10 VPN providers perform in each category. Following this section, I’ll list the top 5 VPNs that offer the best overall performance.

1

Privacy

Privacy protection should be a major consideration when researching a VPN service, no matter what the purpose.

When I say “privacy,” I don’t mean the encryption applied to your internet connection or the kill switch that protects you in case of disconnect. Instead, I’m referring to how well a provider protects the records of your online activities and your payment information.

Make sure you know what country a VPN provider is based in, what that country’s data-retention laws are, what types of logs related to a customer’s account and online travels a service retains, and whether or not they offer privacy-enhancing subscription payment options, like the remaining balance on various merchant gift cards or Bitcoin.

The VPN providers in the list below are ranked in order of most privacy protection to least.

2

Connection Speed

Connection speed is an important factor in any online activity I can think of. Whether you’re using cloud-based apps, using Skype, streaming audio or video, gaming or just killing some time surfing the web, a fast connection enhances your enjoyment.

The list below contains my top 10 VPN providers, listed from the fastest down to the slowest.

The rankings were calculated by first testing my ISP-provided connection speeds. I then connected to each VPN provider, measured the protected speeds and then calculated the speed percentage by comparing the two measurements. (The Speedtest website was used for all speed tests.)

3

Kill Switch

I highly recommend never using a VPN provider whose apps do not offer a “kill switch” option. A kill switch will automatically disconnect your internet connection in the event that your VPN connection fails.

If you are torrenting or connecting to geographically-blocked content and your VPN connection goes down, leaving your internet connection left open to monitoring by Xfinity or any other spy, that is a bad, bad thing.

Any ISP that opposes torrenting or throttles your internet connection for viewing video and other content could bring penalties against you if they discover your online activities.

A kill switch will disconnect your internet connection completely, keeping it from being laid open for all to see. This protects your online activities from those who would look to monitor it and penalize you if you use it as was intended.

“Kill switch” is a binary, “yes/no” type of feature, so the providers have been listed alphabetically in the table below, with a simple “Y” or “N” to note whether or not a kill switch feature is offered.

4

Multi-Platform Support

As Xfinity internet is available for most every computing platform, you’ll want to look for a VPN provider that supports as many of the popular desktop and mobile platforms as possible. All-around platform support ensures that you’ll be able to protect your Xfinity connection from prying eyes no matter what device you’re using.

The VPN providers in the table below are listed in the order of most device platforms supported down to the least supported.

5

Other Factors to Consider

Customer Support

While I wish you all the best when using your VPN of choice, chances are you’re going to have an issue of some kind with it, even if it’s just a billing issue. That means you are going to need to communicate with your provider’s customer support team.

Make sure your VPN of choice provides comprehensive support to its customers. Look for a provider that features live support chat, a trouble ticket submission form and a searchable support library.

The table below has VPN providers ranked according to what types of support they offer, their responsiveness and the quality of their replies.

Note: Phone support is not offered by any of the providers on my list.

Price

How great would it be if we never had to worry about the cost of anything we ever bought. Unfortunately, for many of us, money does matter, and we love scoring a bargain for anything we buy. However, when searching for a VPN provider, never automatically decide on one simply because it’s cheap.

When considering price, always take into consideration what level of service you receive for your money and investigate to make sure a “bargain” provider isn’t cutting corners in important categories, such as connection speed and customer support, in order to offer that low price.

Many VPN providers run promotions from time to time, offering lower prices for their services. If you take advantage of these deals, you may be required to commit to a longer period of service, such as 1 or 2 years, but it can substantially reduce the price you’ll pay for service. Always visit the website of any provider you’re considering to check for possible deals.

Folks that are short on cash or are on a strict budget can also subscribe to most VPN services on a month-to-month basis. Be advised, however, that this will cost you more over the long run.
