Why Do You Need a VPN?

No matter which operating system your computer or mobile device runs, your personal data is at risk when you go online. Any unprotected computer or device is an attractive target for the bad guys. Crooks are looking to steal your personal information, like your social security number, credit and debit card information, and more.

In addition to bad guys looking to steal your personal data, your own Internet Service Provider is once again allowed to sell advertisers information about your online activities without your consent, and your own government would definitely like to keep track of your travels on the information superhighway.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) wraps your internet connection in a layer of encrypted protection. The encryption prevents any outside party from detecting where you’re traveling and what you’re doing once you get there. This keeps your login credentials, banking, credit card and shopping information safe from all those prying eyes.

How Does a VPN Work

In addition to protecting your internet connection, a VPN also allows you to access online content that might not normally be available to you due to geographical restrictions by governments or content providers. It also allows users to access content blocked by their school or employer.

Choosing the Best Cheap VPN

When you’re looking for a VPN that will give you champagne service on a beer-bottle budget, you’ll be faced with numerous options. Trying each provider to see if it fits your needs would prove to be quite expensive, which wouldn’t be feasible if you’re looking for a bargain.

While price is obviously a major consideration when deciding on the top 5 VPN providers I’ve included in this article, it is by no means the only consideration. Taking only the price into account is a big mistake.

It’s also important to find a VPN service that offers fast connections, good global server coverage, good customer support and excellent security protections.

In this section, I’ll list everything you should keep in mind when deciding on a VPN to protect your computer or other connected devices. I’ll also explain why each requirement is important and what you should look for in each category, and then I’ll provide a ranked list of my top VPN providers for each category.

1

Price

It shouldn’t be surprising that an article entitled “Best Cheap VPN” has “Price” listed as the #1 consideration. However, when you’re considering price, also make sure any VPN provider you look at hasn’t cut corners in important categories such as connection quality, customer support and other important features.

Many VPN companies will offer deals on subscriptions from time to time. These deals can greatly reduce the cost of a subscription. If you’re willing to subscribe for a year or more, you can benefit from even larger savings. Always visit a provider’s website for current pricing and offers.

If you’re on a really tight budget, check the providers’ monthly subscription options. However, be aware that monthly options will almost always cost you more in the long run.

2

Connection Speed

Once you’ve narrowed down your provider list based on their subscription costs, look for the provider that supplies the fastest connection speeds. You’ll want to be able to use your VPN connection to access streaming video and audio content, and the faster the connection speeds, the better your streaming experience will be.

The VPN providers in the table below are ranked according to their connection speeds, listed fastest to slowest.

3

Multi-Platform Support

Most VPN users have more than one device. You may have more than one computer, or you’re more likely to own multiple mobile devices, such as both a phone and a tablet. Always look for a provider that supports as many device platforms as possible.

Don’t settle for a provider that doesn’t at least support the most popular computing and mobile platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.

The list below is sorted according to the number of platforms supported by the provider, highest down to the least.

4

Other Factors to Consider

Global Server Coverage

When looking for a bargain VPN provider, always check their global server coverage to make sure they haven’t cut corners when it comes to the number of server locations they provide around the globe.

Look for a provider who has a large number of server farms, placed strategically around the world. The more locations, the better, as this will offer you flexibility as to what geographically-blocked content you’ll be able to access using the VPN’s services.

VPN Global Server Coverage

Customer Support

Hopefully, you’ll never have to contact your VPN provider’s support department with an issue that’s preventing you from connecting to the internet. However, chances are you might have a service or billing-related question from time to time. If you do need support, you don’t want to be left twisting in the wind.

The providers listed below are ranked from best to worst, depending on what types of support they offer and how well they respond to support-related questions.

Note: Phone support is not provided by any of the VPN providers listed below.

Privacy

When considering any VPN provider, investigate as to how well it protects your privacy.

When I say “privacy,” I’m referring to whether a provider is located in a privacy-friendly country, what type of logs they save related to your online activities (if any), and whether or not the provider offers privacy-friendly payment options, such as Bitcoin.

I’ve ranked the VPN providers accordingly below.

The Best Cheap VPNs

1

Price

VyprVPN’s $5.00 monthly subscription fee (payable at an annual rate of $60.00) is in the middle of the pricing pack on this top 5 list. Their monthly subscription price is the second-lowest on the list at $9.95. While not the cheapest provider on the list, VyprVPN is reasonably-priced when you consider the provider’s high level of service.

VyprVPN offers a 3-day money-back guarantee.

2

Connection Speed

VyprVPN’s connection speeds offer plenty of bang for the buck and should provide plenty of speed for almost any online activity. The provider’s connections come within 5% of my ISP-supplied connection speeds.

3

Multi-Platform Support

To get your money’s worth from any VPN provider, you’ll want to be able to use it on as many of your connected devices as possible. VyprVPN provides native apps for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices, routers and even an app for Android-based Smart TVs.

4

Global Server Coverage

With over 700 servers stationed in 65 countries, VyprVPN does the second-best job on this list when it comes to covering the globe with VPN encryption. Their global coverage should offer you plenty of opportunities to connect almost anywhere you’d like to

5

Customer Support

VyprVPN checks all of the boxes in the support category. The provider offers live support chat, a trouble ticket submission form and a knowledge-filled support library for those who prefer to do a bit of digging for answers on their own.

6

Privacy

VyprVPN doesn’t quite perform as well in the Privacy category as they do in others.

While the provider is based in privacy-friendly Switzerland, the company insists on keeping some customer-related logs for up to 30 days. Information includes the user's actual IP address, the VyprVPN-assigned IP address, connection start and stop time, and the number of bytes used.

The provider also lacks an anonymous payment option, such as Bitcoin.

7

Verdict

VyprVPN is the all-around value leader on my cheap VPN list. It boasts fast connections, excellent customer support, good global server coverage and great multi-platform support.

#2 - PureVPN

PureVPN

PROS

  • check
    Great Privacy Protection
  • check
Top Global Server Coverage in the Top 5 List
  • check
Second-Lowest-Priced Provider in the Top 5 List

CONS

  • Slowest Connection Speeds in the Top 5

1

Verdict

PureVPN makes a strong #1 showing in my top 5 list when it comes to pricing. At $3.25 per month (payable every 2 years at $78.00), the provider is an excellent deal for my value-minded readers. A single-month subscription option is available for $10.95 per month, which increases the costs substantially.

Please be aware that this provider almost continually offers special deals, so be sure check their website for current pricing.

The provider offers a 7-day money-back guarantee.

2

Connection Speed

PureVPN supplies reasonably speedy connections. However, they are the  slowest speeds on the top 5 list, measuring in at around 83% of my unprotected ISP speeds. That said, the speed should be sufficient for all but the most demanding of online activities.

3

Multi-Platform Support

PureVPN provides native apps for the Windows, macOS, iOS and Android platforms. In addition, they feature browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox web browsers, as well as router support for compatible routers.

4

Global Server Coverage

PureVPN has over 750 servers spread out in 141 countries. That’s the best global server coverage on this top 5 list. That means that PureVPN should have a server waiting for you, no matter where in the free world you want to connect.

5

Customer Support

PureVPN provides live support chat, a trouble ticket submission form and a searchable knowledge base, which is pretty much the industry standard when it comes to customer support.

While support chat and the knowledge base proved to be wonderful resources, It’s been months, and I’m still waiting for a response to my inquiry via the trouble ticket form.

6

Privacy

Based in privacy-friendly Hong Kong, this provider sticks to a strict “no logs” policy, meaning there would be nothing to turn over even if China were to make changes to the country’s privacy laws.

PureVPN also accepts the privacy-enhancing Bitcoin method of payment, racking up privacy points in the subscription payments category too.

7

Verdict

PureVPN provides great privacy protection, comprehensive global server coverage and excellent multi-platform support, and all at a great low price. I would have felt better ranking them higher on this list if they scored higher in the connection speeds category.

#3 - NordVPN

NordVPN Site Features

PROS

  • check
    Good Connection Speeds
  • check
    Great Customer Support
  • check
    Great Privacy Protection

CONS

  • Second-Highest-Priced Provider on this List

1

Price

NordVPN’s pricing is the second-highest on this top 5 list. It charges $5.75 per month (payable at $69.00 per year) for its subscriptions. While the provider isn’t the cheapest on the list, it does offer a good amount of bank for your buck. An $11.95 month-by-month subscription is also available.

NordVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

2

Connection Speed

NordVPN’s protected connection speeds come in at around 91% of my unfettered ISP-provided speeds. While not ranking at the top of the speed list, the provider’s encrypted speeds should be up to the needs of most online antics.

3

Multi-Platform Support

NordVPN provides native apps for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android devices. In addition, they offer support documents to guide a user through setting up the service on DD-WRT routers, Windows Phone, Linux, Raspberry Pi and other devices.

4

Global Server Coverage

NordVPN’s 1,087 servers located in 61 countries might not be tops in the industry, but it still provides a great way to access geographically-blocked content at a reasonable price.

5

Customer Support

NordVPN offers industry-standard support options, with live support chat, a trouble ticket submission form and a searchable support library for when you’re in a “gonna fix it myself” kind of mood.

Support chat and trouble ticket form inquiries both resulted in prompt, helpful responses, and the support library also proved to be a valuable troubleshooting resource.

6

Privacy

Panama-based NordVPN makes the most of its privacy-friendly locale, following a “no logs” policy, thereby keeping no records of your online adventures.

The provider can also keep your payment information completely anonymous, as it accepts the anonymous Bitcoin cryptocurrency as payment for VPN subscriptions.

7

Verdict

NordVPN is a solid, reasonably-priced option for those on the lookout for a cheap VPN. The provider offers good global server coverage, as well as great customer support and privacy protections. A bit better connection speeds might have resulted in their ranking higher on this list.

#4 - Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access Site

PROS

  • check
Second-Lowest-Priced VPN in the Top 5 List
  • check
Fastest Connection Speeds in the Top 5
  • check
    Excellent Privacy Protections

CONS

  • Worst Global Server Coverage in the Top 5
  • Customer Service Could Stand Some Improvement

1

Price

Private Internet Access (PIA) is the second-cheapest VPN provider on my top 5 list. The low-cost provider charges a $3.33-per-month (payable at $39.95 annually) subscription price. The features offered by the provider make it an excellent value for your money.

Users can also pay month to month at a considerably higher rate of $6.95, though this monthly rate is still the lowest on the list.

PIA offers a 7-day money-back guarantee, giving you a full week to put the provider through its paces to determine if PIA is the VPN for you.

2

Connection Speed

Private Internet Access is a pleasant surprise when it comes to connection speeds, providing the fastest connections on the top 5 list. PIA’s speeds come within 6% of my ISP-only speeds, outperforming providers that are priced considerably higher.

3

Multi-Platform Support

PIA native app support covers the popular desktop and mobile platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux. In addition, they provide browser extensions for Google Chrome and Firefox, and they offer instructions on how to set up their VPN on DD-WRT and Tomato-enabled routers.

4

Global Server Coverage

While 3,250 VPN servers sounds like a large number of VPN servers, what this category is all about is actual global server coverage. Sadly, Private Internet Access has concentrated all of their servers in just 25 countries, meaning you might not be able to access all of the geo-blocked content you have on your list.

Check PIA’s global server coverage to make sure they cover the areas you’re looking to access before making an annual commitment.

5

Customer Support

PIA cuts corners a bit in the customer support department, offering only a trouble ticket submission form and a searchable support library as support options. That said, I received prompt replies to my trouble ticket submissions, and was able to find helpful information in their support library.

6

Privacy

This U.S.-based provider does a top-notch job of protecting their users’ privacy. PIA follows a strict “no logs” policy, retaining no information at all about their customers’ online travels.

They also accept the privacy-friendly Bitcoin payment option, as well as merchant gift card balances. High marks all around for privacy protection.

7

Verdict

Private Internet Access is one of those pleasant little surprises you encounter from time to time. Speedy connections, excellent privacy protections and good multi-platform support make this one a VPN worth considering.

Too bad that PIA didn’t have better global server coverage or customer support, as they otherwise might have ranked at the top of this list.

#5 - IPVanish

IPVanish VPN

PROS

  • check
    Fast Connection Speeds
  • check
    Comprehensive Multi-Platform Support
  • check
    Great Privacy Protections

CONS

  • Global Server Coverage Could Be Better
  • No Online Chat Support Available
  • Highest Price in the Top 5

1

Price

IPVanish’s price of $6.49 per month (payable $77.99 per year) makes it the most expensive VPN provider on this “cheap” list. While the price still won’t break the bank, there are cheaper options that offer better all-around performance. Users also have the option of paying monthly, but it will run them $10.00 per month.

A 7-day money-back guarantee allows users time to decide if IPVanish is the right VPN for their needs.

2

Connection Speed

Providing speeds at around 94% of my usual ISP-supplied speeds, IPVanish offers the third-speediest data delivery system on my top 5 list. You shouldn’t need to wait long for videos to start streaming, or to be able to jump into your next online gaming arena.

3

Multi-Platform Support

With native app support for the Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Fire TV, Windows Phone, Linux and Chromebook platforms, IPVanish features some of the widest-ranging multi-platform support on this list. This provides bargain hunters an economical way to protect all of their connected devices.

4

Global Server Coverage

IPVanish has stationed over 850 servers in 60+ countries, providing an acceptable level of global server coverage. While that is far from the best server offering, it should still have you covered for most of your geography-related VPN needs.

If you’re curious, you can check out IPVanish’s server coverage map for more information.

5

Customer Support

IPVanish doesn’t provide quite the level of support other providers do. Offering only an online trouble ticket submission system and a searchable support forum, users in need of a quick answer may find themselves on hold until an answer comes via email.

6

Privacy

While U.S.-based IPVanish might not be located in the most privacy-friendly country, they still go the extra mile to protect their customers’ privacy. The provider doesn’t keep activity logs of any kind, and they even accept Bitcoin as payment for a subscription. High marks all around.

7

Price

By supplying great privacy protection, comprehensive multi-platform support and speedy connections, IPVanish makes a solid option to consider for your value-minded VPN needs.

If they offered better customer support and were priced slightly lower, they would have certainly ranked higher on my list.

Tips for Using Your Cheap VPN

No matter how much you pay for your VPN subscription, you’ll want to squeeze every bit of value possible out of it. In this section, we’ll explore a few ways to get your money’s worth out of your VPN connection.

Step #1 - Connect to Your Local Network via Ethernet if Possible

This step is optional, but for any computer or device you own that is equipped with an Ethernet port, it’s a worthwhile option to consider.

A wired connection almost always offers a better connection to a local network and the internet than a wireless connection does. A better connection equals better performance.

Ethernet

This is an especially valuable option to explore if you are streaming video on your computer, set-top box or game console. Your video content will usually stream faster and with less buffering by making use of an Ethernet connection.

Step #2 - Manually Select a VPN Server

If you’re connecting to a VPN simply to provide encrypted protection for your online activities, the “auto connect,” “smart connection” or similar feature from your VPN provider will suffice.

However, if you’re looking to stream video or music from a geo-restricted source, you’ll want to manually select your VPN server, thereby allowing you to enjoy go-restricted content.

ExpressVPN Connect
ExpressVPN VPN Locations

Step #3 - Test The Speed and Location of Your Connection

Now that you’re connected to a VPN server, take a few minutes to run a short speed test to make sure your provider is delivering the speeds you’re paying for.

Visit Speedtest.net to check your connection’s speed, ping numbers and connection location. This ensures that you’ve made a high-speed connection and that you have connected to the correct server farm.

Speed Test

If the connection numbers aren’t as fast as you had expected, or if it looks like your connection is actually routed through somewhere other than where you expected (it happens), disconnect, reconnect and check again.

Step #4 - Begin Reaping the Benefits of Your Cheap VPN Connection

Now it’s time to enjoy the benefits of your VPN provider, secure in the knowledge that you’re protecting your personal data, you’re enjoying blocked content, and you didn’t have to pay through the nose to do it.

My Value-Packed Verdict

We discussed earlier in this article how the cheapest VPN provider wasn’t necessarily the best value.

My selection of VyprVPN is the living embodiment of that “rule.” While VyprVPN isn’t the low-priced leader among the VPN services in my top 5 list, they are the best value when all is considered.

VyprVPN offers excellent connection speeds, good privacy protections and great multi-platform support, and it’s priced quite reasonably too.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I hear there is a sale on fidget spinners at Meh.com. I can buy 50 of them for just 30 bucks! What a deal!
