What Is The Best VPN for
Minecraft in 2018?

VyprVPN is, in my opinion, the best VPN for use with Minecraft. The provider offers high-speed connections, making it a great choice for Minecraft or any other type of online gaming. VyprVPN’s speedy connections and low latency numbers make it a worthy option for Minecraft players.

The service also does an excellent job of allowing Minecraft players to access game servers that may be blocked by their school or employer. For some reason, both schools and employers have the silly idea that Minecraft is a productivity killer. PSHAW! The very idea! (Where's the SARCASM button on this keyboard?)

About Minecraft

Minecraft is a “sandbox” type of video game, originally designed and developed by Swedish game designer Markus "Notch" Persson and published by the company Mojang. It debuted in November 2011 and immediately became a popular pastime with players, winning praise from critics and numerous awards and accolades. As of February 2017, over 121 million copies have been sold across all popular computing platforms.

Minecraft

Minecraft allows players to build their own constructions from textured cubes. The game offers activities such as exploration, the gathering of resources, combat and much more. Gameplay modes include Survival, Creative and Adventure modes.

Minecraft is also known for its modding scene, where community members create new assets, items and gameplay mechanics for the popular game. One player even created an environment based on Blizzard's classic action RPG, Diablo 2!

Minecraft Diablo 2 Pandemonium Fortress

Players who haven’t yet leapt into the world of Minecraft should consider themselves warned. The immersive, create-your-own-world mechanics of Minecraft are totally addictive. I have often looked up from a session of the game to find the house quiet, and everyone sound asleep - except for the dog. (Mental note to self: set a reminder to let the dog out before midnight…YUCK!)

After I take a look at the best VPNs to use with Minecraft, I’ll also offer some quick tips about how to best use your VPN of choice with the game.

Why Do You Need a VPN to Play Minecraft?

While Minecraft may be a popular game, with players of all ages enjoying it around the world, it’s a well-known productivity killer. This means many schools and workplaces block access to the Minecraft servers from their internet networks.

While such blocking is well within the rights of an educational institution or corporation, it seems to me that Minecraft players should still be allowed to access Minecraft servers during breaks, lunch hours and other downtimes.

One of the reasons I created this article was to help you get around any restrictions placed on Minecraft at your school or place of business. Keep in mind that if your school or employer finds out you’re playing Minecraft on company time or during class hours, they can terminate your internet access altogether. Even worse, you could be asked to leave the premises carrying a box of your own belongings. Play at your own risk.

VPNs also allow players to connect to servers in other countries, where expansion packs or mods can be found that aren’t yet available in your area. It’s a cool feeling when you’re the first player on your virtual block to snag a much-awaited expansion pack like the Minecraft/Adventure Time Mash Up Pack!

A good VPN provider offers not only an excellent way to access blocked content, but also protection for your day-to-day online activities. A VPN protects your data via an encrypted tunnel, making it nearly impossible for anyone to see what you’re doing. This feature is what enables it to hide your Minecraft activity from network administrators.

Fun fact: Early in my IT career, I found out that there are certain advantages to being in IT. One is that we get to play online games and access websites that are usually blocked for use by employees. All of this is strictly for network stress testing, I didn’t enjoy any of it. Nope, not a bit...

Gamers have also become popular targets of hackers using Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks to wreak havoc, ruining the gaming sessions of players who are just looking for an entertaining diversion from their studies or workday.

A DDoS attack is when hackers use a group of computers and mobile devices that are under their control to flood a server or client with inane requests, overloading the target and making it impossible for it to fulfill legitimate requests for information, such as updates in a game. Luckily, VPN servers offer protection against DDoS attacks, thanks to their encrypted connections and shared IPs.

How to Choose the Best VPN for Minecraft?

There are a number of things to consider when looking for a VPN that will efficiently unblock Minecraft on a restricted internet connection. Users need to consider what kind of global server coverage, connection speeds and safety features a prospective VPN service offers.

Also, a kill switch in case of a lost VPN connection, good customer support and reasonable pricing are important factors to research as well.

1

Global Server Coverage

When you’re considering a VPN for use with Minecraft (or any other online activity for that matter), always make sure the VPN provider supplies good global coverage, with servers located in as many countries as possible.

If you’re a Minecraft fan, chances are you enjoy other types of online gaming. By using a VPN provider with servers in locations around the world, you’ll improve your chances of accessing games, tournaments, downloadable content and achievements that might not usually be available in your area.

VPN Global Server Coverage

The location of a VPN server can also affect the speed and responsiveness of a gaming session. The closer your VPN server is to the server running your game of choice, the better your gaming session will perform.

By choosing a VPN with servers in numerous locations around the globe, you’ll gain the ability to use your VPN connection for other things, such as downloading torrents and streaming content that’s not available in your area.

2

Connection Speed

Always make sure the VPN provider you’re considering offers fast connection speeds and low ping times. Even a great VPN will slow down your online connection, but the amount of the slowdown will vary by provider.

Also, you should always look for a VPN that provides low latency (ping) numbers. Low ping means the time it takes for a server to respond to a request from your computer is kept to a minimum, ensuring you won’t lose a contest because you’re waiting for your session to update.

I tested each provider by first testing the speed of my normal internet connection, straight from my ISP. I then ran each VPN’s app, connected to a U.S. VPN server and again tested my connection speed. I then calculated how close the VPN’s connection speed came to my usual ISP connection. That information is listed in the table below.

3

Kill Switch

The best VPNs offer an automatic “kill switch” to disconnect your session if for some reason your VPN connection fails. This prevents the Minecraft servers from detecting your actual IP address and location, helping to avoid being banned by a server.

As this is a binary, “yes/no” type of question, I’ve ranked the providers alphabetically in the table below.

4

Multi-Platform Support

Since Minecraft is available on most popular platforms, you more than likely play the game on both your computer and your smartphone or tablet. Using a VPN that supports all of the popular computing platforms means you can play Minecraft no matter where you are.

5

Privacy

When considering any VPN provider, always make privacy a top priority. Any top-of-the-line provider will offer a no-logs policy, meaning they don’t keep any record of your online activities while you’re using their VPN service.

Look for a VPN provider located in a privacy-friendly country that doesn’t have any intrusive data-retention laws. Also, any service truly dedicated to protecting your privacy will offer anonymous forms of payment for your subscription, such as Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency.

The table below ranks VPN providers on a scale of 0 to 5, according to the level of privacy they offer. When creating the rankings, I took into consideration their location, their logging policy, and whether they accept Bitcoin and other anonymous payment methods.

6

Other Factors to Consider

Price

When searching for a VPN provider for Minecraft, you should always consider the provider’s pricing. While researching pricing, keep a few things in mind.

The highest-priced provider won’t necessarily offer the best service, and the lowest subscription price isn’t always a good deal. A VPN provider is in business for one reason: to make money. So, the lowest-priced service might be cutting corners in at least one of these categories.

When you’ve found a VPN service that is in your price range, be sure to keep other considerations in mind. Look at how many servers it provides and where they are located, and where the provider ranks according to the speed of their connections. Also consider their customer support ranking.

*The prices in the table reflect the monthly cost when paying for an annual subscription. (Annual Subscription Price / 12 Months.)

Customer Service

Connection speed, server options, multi-platform support and pricing will be major considerations when considering which VPN provider to go with. However, only one feature will really matter when you’re having VPN connection issues at 3 in the morning: customer support.

I ranked the providers’ customer support according to what types of support they offered, how quickly they responded to me and the accuracy of their answers.

In each case, I contacted support by way of whichever contact option(s) they had and then waited for an answer. Methods of contact included online chat and email support, amongst others.

No phone support was offered by any service, but this is standard amongst VPN providers.
