Spotify is available in most of the Americas, as well as most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia. The service provides apps for most popular desktop and mobile platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.

Spotify 90s Smash Hits

Spotify offers access to over 30 million songs. The service boasts over 100 million monthly users, 50 million of whom pay for a monthly subscription. Why Do Music Aficionados Need a VPN to Access Spotify?

While Spotify may be one of the most popular music-streaming services around, it’s not available everywhere. Blocking can be due to geographical restrictions placed by Spotify itself due to its music licensing agreements with the record labels.

Blocks against the service can also be placed by employers, school administrators and even governments who are afraid pop music will corrupt the innocent citizens of their countries. (Was that sarcastic? I feel like that was sarcastic…)

Spotify Not Available

It doesn’t matter why Spotify is blocked, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service is your best bet for blasting through the roadblocks, allowing you to listen to your favorite tunes via the Spotify streaming service.

A VPN can allow an internet connection to appear to be coming from another location. This lets users access geographically-restricted content from providers such as Spotify or Netflix, even though the user doesn’t reside in the same country as the content.

A VPN provider places servers around the globe, allowing users to connect to a server from almost anywhere in the world. A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel, which protects your online connection from monitoring by your government, ISP or other nosy individuals, like hackers.

Spotify Music for Everyone

While someone attempting to monitor your internet connection can see that you’re connected online, they cannot tell what your online activities are. This allows you to go about your business without worry of discovery, be it downloading a torrent, viewing Netflix content from another country or streaming music from one of the countries Spotify serves.

A VPN can also protect your login credentials for websites and other online services, keeping them safe from prying eyes. This protects your personal information while you go about your day-to-day online business, such as online shopping, banking and other activities.

How to Select the Best VPN for Spotify

When considering a VPN provider to unblock Spotify, there are some important considerations to keep in mind. In this section, I’ll share with you the most important features that any VPN must include to be considered as a solution for use with your favorite streaming music service.

1

Global Server Coverage

When you’re considering a VPN for use with Spotify, make sure the provider offers as many VPN server connections in as many locations around the world as possible. The more servers, the more connection options you’ll have available to unblock Spotify, no matter where you might be located.

VPN Global Server Coverage

2

Connection Speed

When it comes to an internet connection, faster is always better, and a VPN connection is no different. A fast connection ensures that the music starts as soon as you load the Spotify service in an app or browser.

Fast connections aren’t just for streaming music, though. You can use your VPN connection to play online games, download files and stream video content that might not normally be available in your local area. A fast connection is always a welcome sight when indulging in any of those activities.

3

Multi-Platform Support

Spotify is available on a number of platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and other popular devices. Make sure your VPN provider provides apps for all of the platforms you use. If you use Spotify on a gaming console or set-top streaming box, you’ll also want a VPN provider that is compatible with the router you use.

Multi-platform support is an important consideration when deciding upon the best VPN to use to unblock Spotify. The popular music streaming service offers support for numerous platforms, including Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox One and Wi-Fi-connected speakers, such as those available from SONOS.

The more platforms your VPN supports, the more you can get out of your Spotify subscription, allowing you to stream your favorite music no matter where you might be. It’s also a plus when it comes to using a VPN for everyday purposes, such as protecting your personal data, playing online games, and streaming video and music content from other services.

4

Privacy

When considering any VPN provider, always make sure to measure how well they protect your privacy. You should consider if they keep logs of your online activities and in what country they are located. (Some countries are more strict than others in requiring VPN providers to keep logs.)

Also, for those users who wish to remain truly anonymous, look for a VPN company that offers anonymous methods of paying for your subscription. An option for allowing payment with Bitcoin is always a welcome sight.

I have ranked the VPN providers listed below on a scale of 0 to 5 and listed them according to the level of privacy they offer. I considered the vendor’s location, their logging policy, and whether they accept Bitcoin or other anonymous methods of payment.

5

Other Factors to Consider

Price

When searching for the right VPN for your needs, always keep price in mind. While this category will weigh heavier in the minds of some users more than others, price is always a part of the equation.

While shopping for a provider, keep in mind that the lowest price isn’t necessarily a bargain. Low-priced VPN providers are still in it to make a buck, so it’s likely that they may have cut corners in some categories in order to keep their prices low and profits high.

Note: VPN providers offer special deals from time to time, which in some cases can greatly reduce your subscription costs. If you’re willing to subscribe for a longer period of time, the savings are even greater. Visit a provider’s website for current pricing and discounts.

Customer Service

While I’ve shared quite a few things for you to consider when shopping for a VPN provider, I’ve yet to discuss a factor that may become the most important one to you someday: customer service.

In the table below, you’ll see providers ranked according to the type of support they offer, how quickly they responded to my support questions and how well they answered those questions.

Note: No phone support is provided by any of the VPN providers listed below. Sadly, phone support is the victim of the providers continual efforts to supply a low-priced VPN service.

The Best VPN for Use With Spotify

#1 -VyprVPN

VyprVPN Site

PROS

  • checkDecent Global Server Coverage
  • checkFast Connections
  • checkBest Price in the Top 5

CONS

  • I Wish Their Privacy Protection Was Better!

1

Global Server Coverage

While VyprVPN doesn’t offer quite as many server locations as my number one selection, they still make a good choice for unblocking Spotify. This provider has 700+ servers in over 65 locations around the world, earning them a solid second place when it comes to server availability

2

Connection Speed

VyprVPN’s above-average connection speeds mean you’ll never have to wait for your playlists to load before you rock your jam with Spotify. Their connection speeds come within 6% of the speeds I get from my usual ISP connection, making the provider a great way to access any blocked content, streaming or otherwise.

3

Multi-Platform Support

As Spotify is available on the Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and PlayStation platforms, as well as a significant number of set-top streaming devices and Smart TVs, multi-platform support is quite important.

VyprVPN offers support for just about every popular mobile or desktop device. Compatible devices include Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. In addition, the provider supports Linux, routers and other devices such as Android Smart TVs. This means you’ll be able to listen to your Spotify playlists no matter which device you’re using.

4

Privacy

VyprVPN provides good privacy protection, even though they do keep a few types of logs connected to your account. The Switzerland-based VPN retains data for 30 days, related to the following: the user’s source IP address, the VyprVPN IP address used by the user, connection start and stop time, and total number of bytes used.

They also retain the data above to use with billing issues, troubleshooting, service offering evaluation, TOS issues, AUP issues and for handling crimes performed over the service. They do not log a user’s traffic or the content of any communications.

Sadly, the provider does not accept any form of privacy-protecting cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin.

5

Price

VyprVPN’s $60 yearly fee makes it the low-price leader in the top 5. The provider offers a 3-day money-back guarantee, which should give you more than enough time to put VyprVPN through its paces and confirm that it’s a fit for your particular online needs.

6

Customer Service

VyprVPN’s customer support is top-notch. They supply an online chat option, as well as an online trouble ticket submission form. Support’s response time was excellent and offered accurate solutions to my issues. The provider’s website also includes a support library full of useful information for use by do-it-yourselfers.

7

Verdict

VyprVPN ranks a solid #1 in my Spotify VPN list. It supplies speedy connections, wonderful customer support, a decent level of global server coverage and great multi-platform support.

Although VyprVPN doesn’t provide a money-back guarantee, their 3-day free trial should be sufficient to tell if the provider is the best one for you.

#2 – NordVPN

NordVPN Site

PROS

  • checkAdequate Server Coverage
  • checkFast Connections
  • checkGreat Multi-Platform Support
  • checkGood Privacy Protection

CONS

  • Worst Customer Service Rating in the Top 5

1

Global Server Coverage

NordVPN has 1,078 servers located in 61 countries, which amounts to decent, if not great, global server coverage. They have most of their servers located in Europe and the surrounding area, making this an excellent choice if you’re trying to access the U.K. version of Spotify.

2

Connection Speed

This provider brings a consistently fast connection to the bargaining table. With a connection speed that measures in at around 91% as fast as my unfettered ISP connection, NordVPN offers a more-than-adequate data flow for Spotify. It is also more than enough for video streaming, downloading files and online gaming, if that’s what you’re into.

3

Multi-Platform Support

NordVPN offers great multi-platform support, boasting apps for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. The provider also supports Chrome OS, Windows Phone, Linux and Raspberry Pi, and DD-WRT and Tomato-based routers.

4

Privacy

NordVPN is one of the better providers around when it comes to protecting your privacy. The provider is located in Panama, which is one of the most privacy-friendly countries around. NordVPN has a strict “no logs” policy, meaning they wouldn’t have anything to turn over even if the law did ask for your online activity records.

The provider also adds an additional layer of privacy protection by accepting Bitcoin as an anonymous payment option.

5

Price

Since I just mentioned Bitcoin, let’s take a look at NordVPN’s pricing. At $69 per year, the provider’s annual subscription rate is the second-lowest price in the top 5. It’s an excellent value for a vendor of this caliber. They offer a generous 30-day money-back guarantee if you decide you’d rather look elsewhere for protection.

6

Customer Service

NordVPN provides customer support by way of both an online trouble ticket support form and online support chat. In both cases, the support agents responded quickly and answered with helpful information. The service also boasts a comprehensive online knowledge base for those that prefer to dig for answers on their own.

7

Verdict

NordVPN offers decent global server coverage, excellent connection speed, and great multi-platform and customer support. All of this adds up to a solid #2 ranking on my top 5 list for Spotify.

#3 – Hide My Ass!

HideMyAss! VPN

PROS

  • checkFastest Provider in the Top 5
  • checkGreat Customer Service
  • checkBest Global Server Coverage in the Top 5

CONS

  • Worst Privacy Protection in the Top 5
  • Needs to Improve Their Multi-Platform Support

1

Global Server Coverage

Hide My Ass! (HMA!) boasts 760+ servers located in over 210 countries. This helps put it solidly at the top of the list when it comes to global server coverage. The number of available locations should enable you to connect to Spotify from wherever you may wander.

2

Connection Speed

HMA! consistently provides excellent connection speeds, usually within a few percentage points of my usual ISP-provided connection. This makes this provider an excellent option for anyone looking for a way to access Spotify from a blocked location. The provider’s speeds also make it a great option for unblocking video streams, gaming servers and more.

3

Multi-Platform Support

Hide My Ass! really needs to work on their multi-platform support. While the provider supports the Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Linux platforms, plus a select number of DD-WRT routers, you might find that your device isn’t covered.

4

Privacy

Hide My Ass! doesn’t do a great job of hiding your ass when it comes to logging and payment options. HMA! does store logs regarding some of your online activity for 2 to 3 months, and they have been known to share it with outside parties in certain cases.

HMA! also doesn’t accept any privacy-enhancing forms of payment, such as Bitcoin. So, if you’re looking to have your ass completely covered, you might want to look elsewhere.

5

Price

If you’re looking for a bargain price on VPN service, HMA! might not be the right choice for you. HMA! is the most expensive provider in my top 5 list. The provider’s $78.66 yearly fee is a bit pricey, but users willing to pay the premium will experience a great level of service.

A 30-day money-back guarantee means users will have a lengthy amount of time to decide if the provider hides their ass well enough to merit the premium price.

6

Customer Service

Customer service is another category where this provider really shines. Scoring a perfect 5.0 in my customer service ratings, HMA! offers excellent response time to customer inquiries.

Hide My Ass! provides both online chat support and an online trouble ticket form. Response time for trouble tickets would usually be measured in minutes, not hours or days. Chat personnel were courteous and did all they could to resolve any issues they were presented with. Do-it-yourselfers can use the provider’s comprehensive support library to find answers.

7

Verdict

Hide My Ass! boasts a high level of service, with great connection speeds and excellent customer service. It could do better in protecting your privacy as well as providing better support for all of your devices. As it stands, HMA! is an excellent provider that would have ranked higher if its price was a bit more reasonable.

#4 – PureVPN

PureVPN

PROS

  • checkProtects Users’ Privacy
  • checkSecond-Best Global Server Coverage in the Top 5

CONS

  • Customer Service Needs Improvement
  • Price Could Be Lower
  • Lowest Speeds in the Top 5

1

Global Server Coverage

Ranking #2 overall in global server coverage, PureVPN provides over 750 servers stationed in 180+ locations in 141 countries around the globe. This means you should be able to connect to a server in just about any place around the world.

2

Connection Speed

PureVPN’s connection speeds are only good for last place in my top 5, but their speeds are still pretty darned fast. The provider regularly provides connections within 17% of my usual ISP connection speeds. That’s still pretty darned fast, coming in at around 54 Mbps.

3

Multi-Platform Support

PureVPN’s multi-platform support isn’t the best, but it still covers the most popular device platforms. Apps are available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices. Plugins are available for the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers. It also works with a good number of routers.

4

Privacy

PureVPN is located in, and operates under, the jurisdiction of Hong Kong, where there are no mandatory data-retention laws. The provider has a “no logs” policy and keeps no record of your online activities. As Hong Kong is a Chinese possession, this could change at any time.

This provider also accepts Bitcoin, adding another layer of privacy protection.

5

Price

PureVPN ranks as the third-most-expensive VPN provider in the top 5 list. At $70.76 per year, better prices are definitely easy to find. However, PureVPN regularly offers special deals, so be sure to check their website for their current pricing before making a decision.

This provider offers a 7-day money-back guarantee, so you’ll have plenty of time to decide if this is the “spot-on” VPN provider for you.

6

Customer Service

PureVPN customer service department ranks the lowest among the VPN providers in my top 5 list. The provider does supplies online support chat, an online trouble ticket submission form, and a quite helpful knowledge base.

However, while their online chat agent was knowledgeable and polite, their response time to my trouble ticket question was horrible. Like, I-never-heard-back-from-them horrible.

7

Verdict

PureVPN provides decent connection speeds, does a good job of covering the globe with their servers and offers excellent privacy-protection features. Unfortunately, their pricing is a bit dear and their customer support could use some improvement.

While the provider isn’t your worst choice for a VPN provider to use with Spotify, there are better options available. If you can catch them while they’re offering a sale, you might want to consider them.

#5 – IPVanish

IPVanish VPN

PROS

  • checkGood Connection Speeds
  • checkGood Customer Service
  • checkGood Multi-Platform Support

CONS

  • Global Server Coverage Could Do With Improvement
  • Second-Highest Price in the Top 5 List

1

Global Server Coverage

With 850+ servers located in over 60 countries, IPVanish doesn’t quite provide the comprehensive global server coverage that other providers in the top 5 do. That said, most Spotify listeners should be able to find a server that will let them connect to the streaming music service.

2

Connection Speed

IPVanish ranks third in my list of top providers for Spotify. Offering a connection 94% as fast as my unfettered ISP connection, IPVanish provides a more-than-fast-enough connection for Spotify, as well as streaming video, downloading files or playing in online gaming tournaments.

3

Multi-Platform Support

IPVanish offers good multi-platform support, providing apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, WIndows Phone, Linux, Chromebook and popular routers. The provider even has a native app for Amazon’s Fire TV streaming box.

4

Privacy

Although IPVanish operates in the less-than-privacy-friendly United States, the provider follows a strict “no logs” policy. They keep no logs of a customer’s online activities. It should be noted that the regime currently occupying the White House is less than friendly when it comes to privacy, so who knows what laws could come down the pike.

IPVanish also accepts the privacy-friendly Bitcoin cryptocurrency as payment for subscriptions.

5

Price

With a tariff of $77.99 per year, IPVanish is the second-most-expensive VPN provider in the top 5 list. That said, while there are cheaper VPNs, not many offer connections as fast or privacy features matching IPVanish.

The provider offers a 7-day money-back guarantee.

6

Customer Service

IPVanish provides three methods of support, like most VPN providers, but takes a slightly different approach than others. They supply a web-based trouble ticket submission form and a helpful knowledge base, just like most of the other providers. However, instead of offering an online chat support option, they provide a public forum where users and support folk can interact.

7

Verdict

When it comes to pricing, any of the other 4 providers on my top 5 list are a better deal. However, IPVanish offers great connection speeds, good multi-platform support and sufficient privacy protection. Amazon Fire TV users will definitely want to take a closer look at IPVanish, due to their unusual support for the device.

How to Use a VPN to Access Spotify

Once you’ve decided on a VPN provider and have installed the provider’s app on your device, you’ll want to take a few extra steps to ensure you have an excellent Spotify listening experience.

Step #1 – Connect Your Mac or PC via Ethernet (Optional)

If you’ll be listening to Spotify via your Mac or PC, then, if at all possible, connect your computer to your router via an Ethernet cable in place of a wireless connection.

While an Ethernet connection won’t be viable for many users, the direct connection to the router will offer you an all-around improved internet connection. An improved internet connection equals a better online experience.

Ethernet

Step #2 – Select the VPN Server

Make sure to select a VPN server in the same country as your Spotify account. This will ensure that you’ll be able to connect to the Spotify servers and can begin listening to your favorite tunes immediately.

VyprVPN ConnectVyprVPN Server Location Screen

Step #3 – Test Your Connection

After connecting to a VPN server, load Speedtest.net in your browser of choice. This will allow you to test your VPN connection’s speed and view the country that Speedtest thinks you’re connected in. All of this ensures you won’t be turned away when you attempt to log in to Spotify.

Speed Test

Step #4 – Crank it up to 11

Select your playlist, put on your headphones, and rock and/or roll!

Volume Setup

The Fat Lady Signs

While any of the five VPN providers I’ve covered here will do a serviceable job of providing a secure connection to your favorite tunes on Spotify, only one can be termed the best.

VyprVPN offers excellent speeds, a great selection of servers and protection for your personal data when conducting your day-to-day online business.
