About Skype

Skype is a video and voice chat app owned by Microsoft. The app allows computer, mobile device and even game console users to conduct audio and video calls - both one-to-one and multi-user conference calls - and the sharing of certain types of digital documents. These features make the app especially handy for business users. Users can also text message other users within the app.

Although the Skype app is available as a free download and costs nothing for Skype-to-Skype messaging or calling, credits or a service subscription is required to place calls to landline or mobile phone numbers. The service boasts as many as 300 million estimated active users each month.

Skype Features

Fun Fact: Wikipedia notes the name for Skype was originally derived from “Sky peer-to-peer,” which was then shortened to “Skyper.” However, many of the domain names associated with “Skyper” were already taken, so the final “r” was dropped from the name, resulting in “Skype.”

The Skype service is available on the Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android platforms, as well as the Kindle Fire HD tablet. The app is also available for the Microsoft Xbox One, as well as Sony PlayStation Portable devices, including the PSP-3000 and the PlayStation Vita.

Connections are platform-agnostic, which means that users on any of the available platforms can connect with users of the app on other platforms with no issues.

Microsoft had supplied a corporate communications tool called Skype for Business, but terminated the service in September 2017, rolling the service’s capabilities into the Microsoft Office 365 tool, Microsoft Teams.

Why Do You Need a VPN to Use Skype?

While Skype is a great way to stay in touch, not all countries, ISPs and telecom companies agree with that. In many countries, Skype is blocked. The reasons a country would block Skype can vary.

Totalitarian governments may fear their citizens will communicate with the outside world. Or, state-run phone and internet firms may wish to restrict their customers’ communications on systems other than those owned by the state. Patent licensing can also prevent the use of Skype in a country.

Even if Skype isn’t blocked in your country (its use is widely accepted in “free” countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom and most European countries), your government or hackers may be monitoring your Skype communications.

Once upon a time, it was difficult to monitor Skype conversations. Recent changes in the way Skype parent firm Microsoft handles calls make it much easier for the bad guys to monitor your calls, be they audio or video. (Psst! Even Microsoft itself monitors Skype conversations.)

The best way to cloak your Skype calls from the prying eyes of restrictive governments, hackers or even your nosy Internet Service Provider is by the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN encases your internet connection in an encrypted tunnel, while also making it appear that your connection is from an entirely different location - making it much harder to monitor or block your Skype discussions.

How to Choose the Best VPN for Skype

When you’re researching VPNs to use with Skype, you should weigh multiple factors before making your final decision. As you research VPN providers, keep the following considerations in mind.

1

Global Server Coverage

Skype users looking for a VPN provider will want to pay close attention to any potential suitor’s global server coverage. Make sure any VPN service you’re considering offers VPN servers in the locations you’ll need them to be.

Look for a provider that offers a large number of server farms placed in strategic locations around the globe. This will make the service a valuable tool to unblock Skype in countries where it’s outlawed, and will also allow you to protect all of your Skype communications from prying eyes, no matter where you need to make a call.

In the table below, I’ve listed VPN providers ranked according to the number of countries where the service has servers located, from best to worst.

2

Connection Speed

When considering a VPN for use with Skype, one of the most important factors to consider is connection speed. Skype requires consistently fast internet connections in order to stream video and audio calls smoothly.

When researching VPN providers, always look for a service that can provide speedy connections, coming as close as possible to the speeds of your unfettered ISP connection speeds.

The VPN vendors in the table below are listed according to the speed of their connections, fastest service first.

3

Privacy

When considering a VPN provider to protect your internet connection, always look for a service that will work to protect your privacy on every level. While any VPN provider will offer encrypted connections and hide your actual location, there is more to privacy protections than just that.

Look for a VPN provider housed in a privacy-friendly country. Check to see what their usage logs policy is. (Ideally, you want a provider that has a strict “no logs” policy that keeps absolutely no records of your online activities.) Also, true privacy-friendly providers will accept a privacy-enhancing cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin.

The VPN providers listed in the table below are ranked according to how well they protect your privacy, first to worst.

4

Multi-Platform Support

The availability of Skype on most popular computer and mobile operating systems means that multi-platform support is an important consideration when searching for the right VPN provider for use with the popular video calling software.

Always look for a VPN service that supports as many popular platforms as is possible, as this ensures your Skype conversations will always be kept private and unblocked, no matter which device you make the call on.

The table below lists the VPN providers in order of the number of device platforms supported, most to least.

5

Kill Switch

Your VPN provider should always offer a “kill switch,” which is a feature that allows you to automatically disconnect your internet connection if you lose your connection to the VPN servers.

This increases the security of your Skype conversations (and other online communications) by ensuring that your connection won’t be laid open to hackers, government-types and other folks who might be interested in what you’re saying.

This category is a binary, “yes/no” type of thing, so I’ve ranked the providers alphabetically in the table below.

Other Factors to Consider

This section contains other factors to consider that may prove valuable to prospective VPN customers before deciding on a VPN subscription.

Price

If you don’t need to worry about the cost of a VPN provider, feel free to skip this section.

...Is Daddy Warbucks gone? Okay. Now, for the rest of us.

While the cost of a VPN subscription is certainly an important consideration, never make your decision based entirely on the amount of an annual subscription fee.

Check if a provider has cut any corners in their effort to bring down their prices. Does the provider offer adequate customer support? Do they offer fast connection speeds? Where are their server farms located?

Note: Most VPN providers offer promotional pricing now and then - in some cases significantly reducing the cost of a subscription. And, if you’re willing to spring for a longer subscription commitment, you may even score greater discounts. Be sure to visit the website of any provider you’re considering for their current pricing and offers.

*The prices in the table reflect the monthly cost when paying for an annual subscription. (Annual Subscription Price / 12 Months.)

Customer Support

While I hope your experience with VPN services is always happy, filled with fast speeds and reliable connections, Murphy had it right when he said, “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”

It’s important to find a VPN provider that provides responsive and informed customer support, ready at a moment’s notice to help you fix any issues you’re experiencing.

The providers listed below are ranked according to the types of support they offer, how quickly they reply to questions, and how accurate their responses proved to be.

Note: Phone support is not provided by any of the VPN providers listed below.
