Aren’t Discord Messages Already Encrypted?

While your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can’t see your messages when you use Discord because Discord sends messages through HTTPS, that doesn’t mean others can’t read your messages.

For instance, if you’re using Discord at work and your employer is using a web proxy, your employer will have complete access to the content of your messages. In addition, if you’re using a public WiFi hotspot, a hacker could intercept your messages because public WiFi hotspots are notoriously non-secure.

It’s true that Discord uses end-to-encryption for its voice calls, so not even the company can listen in on the “juicy details.” However, your text chats aren’t end-to-end encrypted, and they’re stored on Discord’s servers, so there’s no such protection for them.

That’s in addition to the fact that Discord’s privacy policy states that it logs your IP address and device ID, so your messages can be traced back to you easily.

There are ways around this, like using third-party plugins or encrypting your messages before sending them (although this takes a lot of time), but your best bet is using a VPN.

A VPN can hide your IP address easily, so none of your identifiable information can be logged.

My VPN Isn’t Working With Discord – Help!

If your VPN isn’t working with Discord, it’s probably due to one of two reasons.

The first reason may be that your VPN doesn’t support UDP connections, which is essential when using Discord. However, most VPNs allow you to choose between UDP and TCP connections when you use the OpenVPN protocol, so this really shouldn’t be an issue.

If you’re having trouble figuring out how to configure your VPN to use UDP, contact your VPN’s customer support team.

What’s more probable is that you’re using a VPN server that has had its IP addresses banned. Because trolls will often target Discord servers and consequently receive a ban, they’ll then just choose a new server and start their escapades all over again.

You’ll encounter this problem more often with free VPNs, which have fewer servers (and thus fewer IP addresses) than paid VPNs do.

Is a Free VPN a Good Option for Discord?

I would never recommend using a free VPN over a paid VPN, for a multitude of reasons.

First of all, free VPNs don’t often offer apps for iOS or Android, and browser extensions are also rare. If you were looking to connect with friends over Discord using one of those methods, I’m sorry to say you’ll be out of luck.

In addition, free VPN providers usually make users wait in a queue behind other free users before allowing them to connect. Your Discord session will just have to wait.

Once you are allowed to connect, you’ll only have a few server locations to choose from, if any choice factors into the equation at all.

Most freebie VPN service providers will also throttle your connection speeds to save bandwidth for their paying users. Not to mention, they also often impose daily or monthly data caps, meaning you could be disconnected abruptly.

Finally, you should keep in mind that your online privacy is NOT protected. Free VPNs have to make a profit somehow, and they usually do so by tracking their users’ online activities and selling the related information to nosy third parties, like advertisers. You’ll also sometimes find unwanted ads and tracking cookies during your browsing sessions.
