Choosing a VPN

Before purchasing a VPN subscription, always take a close look at how well a provider performs in several service categories.

In this article, I’ll be pitting two VPN providers, VyprVPN and Private Internet Access (PIA), in a head-to-head playoff. The VPNs will compete in each service arena, then I’ll calculate the overall scores for both competitors and declare a victor.

When you reach the end of this article, you should have plenty of information at hand, allowing you to make a well-informed buying decision.

VyprVPN vs Private Internet Access – Features

In this section, I’ll examine the VPN features you should investigate before deciding on a VPN provider. I’ll tell you why each category is important and then declare the best VPN in that service category.

Connection Speeds

A fast internet connection is an advantage for so many online activities. Whether you’re sharing large files, streaming video, or playing games, a fast connection is your best friend.

My VPN connection speed tests are conducted on a regular basis. The tests are run as follows:

  1. A North American Windows server with a gigabit Ethernet connection is used for the testing.
  2. I connect to three different VPN servers – located in London, New York City, and Hong Kong – at three different times of the day.
  3. I use the Windows versions of the VPN providers’ apps, configured to connect using the Wireguard protocol when it is available.
  4. I use the Speedtest app to measure download speeds after connecting to each VPN server location. I restart the Speedtest app after each speed test.

While both VPN services delivered sufficient speeds, one provider outperformed the other by better than three times.

VyprVPN provided blazing download speeds, coming in at 258.0 Mbps.

Private Internet Access provided an average download speed of 73.3 Mbps.

Both providers delivered speeds that can handle streaming 4K video, playing fast-moving games, and more, but PIA may require you to buffer a bit while viewing 4K sources.

You’ll likely see different connection speeds than I did, as VPN connection speeds depend on your usual ISP-provided connection speeds, where you’re located, and the location of the VPN server you select.

Pricing

The price of food, fuel, and VPN service is on the rise, so we’re all looking to save money where we can. Unfortunately, this may cause you to only concentrate on a VPN’s price.

Super-cheap or free VPNs probably won’t offer the protection and features you require for your needs. This is the reason you should take the time to consider a VPN’s true value.

VyprVPN’s monthly fee is equivalent to the price of a medium coffee-based drink from your favorite coffee place when you opt for a one-year subscription.

A month of Private Internet Access will cost about the price of a small coffee when you subscribe to the provider’s annual plan. PIA offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

I never include the exact prices for VPN subscription prices in my articles. This is because VPNs change their pricing and run special deals on a regular basis, so pricing information can quickly become outdated. Visit the VPN providers’ websites to find out their current pricing.

Privacy

If you risk going online without a VPN, you’ll leave a trail of evidence that allows nosy types to see what you’ve been up to. This is why a VPN’s privacy protection is an important consideration.

When researching a VPN’s privacy protections, consider the following:

  • Is the provider based in a privacy-friendly country?
  • Does the provider save user activity logs on its servers?
  • Is cryptocurrency a payment option?

VyprVPN is based in Switzerland (where they have excellent privacy laws), keeping no user logs of any kind on its servers. Unfortunately, VyprVPN doesn’t offer any cryptocurrency payment options.

Private Internet Access is located in the United States, which is a Five Eyes country. However, PIA does not save user logs on its servers, so you don’t need to worry about any of your usage info being shared. The provider accepts cryptocurrency to protect your payment privacy.

Security

A VPN prevents outsiders from tracking you online in real-time. It does this by encrypting your internet connection, while also temporarily assigning a fresh IP address to your connected device. All of this keeps your current online antics incognito.

VyprVPN’s military-level encryption protects its users’ online travels, along with a kill switch. WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, and PPTP connection protocols are available. Also available is the company’s proprietary Chameleon protocol, which disguises your VPN usage as normal browser traffic.

Private Internet Access keeps your online travels undercover with banking-grade encryption, a kill switch, and DNS/IP leak prevention. Wireguard, PPTP, OpenVPN, and L2TP/IPSec connection protocols are available, depending on the app.

Simultaneous Connections

You likely own more than one connected device, and you probably use many of those devices simultaneously. This makes a VPN provider’s simultaneous connections allowance an important thing to consider.

VyprVPN allows up to 10 simultaneous connections to its global server network.

Meanwhile, Private Internet Access also allows up to 10 concurrent connections to its network.

Streaming Support

If you’re like me, you subscribe to more than one streaming service. If you’re not using a VPN, you’re not getting everything that you could out of your subscriptions, as most streaming services restrict their content to viewing in specified countries.

A VPN opens up access to geo-fenced content by temporarily assigning a new IP address to your connected device. This makes it look as if your device is connecting to the internet from another region of the globe, enabling access to streaming content that is usually limited to viewing in other parts of the world.

VyprVPN provides access to quite a few geo-limited streaming services, including Netflix US, Netflix UK, Netflix Canada, MLB.tv, DAZN, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, ESPN, and others.

Private Internet Access also provides reliable access to geo-restricted content, including US, UK, Japanese, Danish, German, and Swedish Netflix content. It also provides access to BBC iPlayer, CBC, Hotstar, 9Now, 10play, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Disney+, and many others.

Streaming Support Winner: Calling it a tie. VyprVPN unblocks more US streaming services, while PIA unblocks more international streamers

BitTorrent Support

BitTorrent is an efficient and popular way to share files over the internet. While file sharing is legal in most parts of the world (reputable companies use P2P to share files among their employees), many ISPs will immediately throttle or block your internet connection if they see you sharing files.

This is because sharing copyrighted materials is illegal. The entertainment industry pressures ISPs to block BitTorrent activity. This is why ISPs throttle or block your connection, no matter what files you’re sharing.

A VPN prevents this by encrypting your internet connection and temporarily assigning a new IP address to your device. Your ISP or anyone else can’t see that you’re sharing files or trace your P2P activity back to you.

Private Internet Access allows file sharing on its entire server network.

VyprVPN also allows the activity on its global server network.

Global Server Coverage

A VPN with a large global server network helps access geo-controlled content. In addition to streaming services limiting access to their content, other websites will also block access to anyone from outside of certain areas.

Also, look for a provider with more than one server in each country. Multiple servers help prevent any single server from being overloaded by too many users connecting at once.

Private Internet Access has 3,300+ servers, in 80+ countries around the globe.

VyprVPN also boasts an above-average global server network, with 700+ servers in 80+ countries.

Multi-Platform Support

If you own multiple devices, there is a good chance that all of those devices run different operating systems. This is why a VPN provider’s multi-platform support is important.

VyprVPN’s native app list includes Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, and Windows device platforms. A Chrome browser extension is available, as is compatibility with certain routers. (Ready-to-go routers are available through Flashrouters.com.)

PIA offers native app support for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Android TV, Linux, and Amazon Fire TV device platforms. Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browser extensions are available, as is support for select routers. (Pre-configured routers are also available from Flashrouters.com.)
