Why Are International Users Banned From Some Austrian Websites and Services?

Having a subscription to an Austrian streaming service is great, but it won’t matter if you’re outside of Austria. The content will not be available to you.

Geo-blocking is not limited to video streaming services. Also subject to geo-blocking are music streaming services, gaming servers and content, and other sites and services.

Financial institutions are in the same boat, but for good reason. If they find that someone outside of the country is trying to access your bank account, they’ll block access because it’s a red flag that the person may not be authorized to access the account. This is a good thing, except when the person is you, just trying to access your account from another country.

A VPN can help with this, making you appear to be in Austria so you can access your account without any fuss. However, it’s still a good idea to let your bank or other financial institution know when you’re going to be out of the country, so you’re not accidentally locked out of your account.

How Is Content Geographically Blocked?

It’s possible for your access to be blocked on account of your IP address.

Your device, and every internet-connected device, has an IP address. This IP address lets the internet know where a request came from and where a response needs to go, much like a home address lets the postal service know where a package came from and needs to go.

But home addresses and IP addresses are similar in another way. They both reveal your physical location.
