It doesn’t matter whether you’re an expat, vacationing abroad, traveling overseas for business reasons, or just a fan of Swedish content – if you want access to stream or download content from Sweden, you need a Swedish IP address.
How do you get an IP address from Sweden? By using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
How Does a VPN Grab a Swedish IP Address?
First of all, let’s go over what an IP address is.
An IP address is what identifies your device on a network – in this case, the network is the internet. Every internet-connected device has an IP address. It’s what allows other devices on the network to know where a request came from and where a response needs to go.
You can compare it to a home address, which allows postal carriers to know where packages came from and where they need to go. But, just like a home address, an IP address also reveals your physical location.
Fortunately, thanks to a VPN, you can “spoof” your IP address and make the (online) world believe you’re somewhere you actually aren’t by giving you a Swedish IP address. All you have to do is connect to a VPN’s servers in Sweden.
In this article, I go into detail about the six best VPNs to use to get a Swedish IP address.
How to Get an IP Address in Sweden
Changing your IP address to one from Sweden is simple. Just follow the steps below:
- Buy a subscription to a VPN service (I recommend NordVPN).
- Install the provider’s app(s) on your device(s).
- Open the app and select a VPN server in Sweden.
- Open up your favorite Swedish site or service, which you normally can’t connect to.
- Enjoy your favorite Swedish content!
TRY A TOP VPN RISK-FREE: Since top VPNs offer 30- to 45-day money-back guarantees, you essentially get a free trial of the service. If you find that you don’t want to continue with the service, you can always cancel before the period has elapsed to get a no-questions-asked, full refund.
Best VPNs for Obtaining a Swedish IP Address
I put VPNs through a lot of tests before they ever make it into any of my articles. After all the research and testing I’ve done, I’ve concluded that the VPNs listed below are the best for obtaining an IP address from Sweden.
If you haven’t got a lot of time, here are the most important details.
The best VPNs for getting a Swedish IP address:
- NordVPN: My #1 top VPN for getting an IP address in Sweden. The provider’s above-average security and robust privacy protections, speedy connections, comprehensive multi-platform support, and more all combine to make it the best choice for a Swedish IP address. Risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Surfshark: Top budget VPN for Swedish IP addresses. Surfshark’s subscription costs are cheap, making it the best budget-priced option. That low price doesn’t mean the provider is cutting any corners, though. It offers exceptional connection speeds, optimal security and privacy protections, and an unlimited simultaneous connections allowance.
- ExpressVPN: Premium access to Swedish IP addresses. ExpressVPN’s reliable content-unblocking ability, wide server location network, fast download speeds, and support for multiple device platforms all make it a great VPN for streaming. The provider’s security and privacy protections are also excellent.
- CyberGhost: Excellent VPN option for first-timers. CyberGhost is the top option for users who are new to VPNs thanks to their simple apps, which offer one-click protection. The provider offers reliably fast connection speeds, a truly global server network, and apps for most popular devices.
- Private Internet Access (PIA): Reliable access to Swedish content. PIA provides reliable access to IP addresses from inside of Sweden, delivering reliable access to geo-fenced content, while also keeping its users’ online activities private.
- PrivateVPN: Small but powerful VPN server network. While PrivateVPN has an admittedly low global server count, it provides reliable access to IP addresses and content from Sweden, as well as in the other countries it serves.
How to Choose the Right VPN to Get an IP Address in Sweden
When it came to choosing which VPNs were the best for getting an IP address in Sweden, I assessed the following criteria:
- Server locations available in Sweden
- Speedy connections
- High-end security
- Strong privacy protections
- Support for many device platforms
- Reliable customer support
You can read more information about the criteria I used in the testing methodology section later in this article.
Below you’ll find the six best VPNs for getting a Swedish IP address.
1. NordVPN
NordVPN has a reputation for providing fast connection speeds, solid security and privacy protections, and a wide server network, making it the #1 provider on my list.

If you have a need for speed, NordVPN will satisfy. The provider offers some of the fastest speeds in the industry, making for an excellent experience while streaming video, gaming online, and sharing files. Bandwidth limitations and daily or monthly data caps are nowhere to be found.
Security-wise, NordVPN performs well, offering government-level encryption, a kill switch, IPv6 and DNS leak protections, as well as ad and malware blocking.

This means all data is automatically wiped whenever a server is rebooted or shut down.
NordVPN offers apps for most popular device platforms, increasing the chance that your favorite devices will be covered. There are native apps for macOS, iOS, Android, Windows, Linux, Amazon Fire, and Android TV device platforms.
Browser extensions are available for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, and the provider offers compatibility with many router makes and models.
You can connect up to six devices to NordVPN’s servers simultaneously on one account.

CyberGhost provides reliably fast connection speeds, improving the enjoyment you get from streaming video, gaming online, and sharing large files. Thanks to its streaming-dedicated servers, your streaming experience will be even better.
It offers high-end encryption, as well as a kill switch, IPv6 and DNS leak protections, the ability to block ads, malicious websites and online trackers, and a feature that forces websites to open HTTPS versions of their pages when available.

Private Internet Access (PIA) has 3,300+ servers in its network, spread among 90+ countries (including Sweden). This large network provides reliable access to IP addresses and geo-controlled content in Sweden, as well as numerous other countries around the globe.
PIA provides comprehensive protection for its customers’ connections, using banking-grade encryption, a kill switch, and IP/DNS leak prevention to keep your online travels incognito. The provider also offers blocking of ads, trackers, malware, and malicious websites.

6. PrivateVPN
PrivateVPN has the lowest server count on this list, as it has only 200+ or so servers in its network, covering Sweden and 62+ other countries. That said, the provider still does a good job of providing access to IP addresses in the countries where it locates its servers.
PrivateVPN also brings up the rear in the connection speeds competition, although the provider’s connections can easily handle most popular online activities.
All of PrivateVPN’s connections are well-protected with government-grade encryption, IP/DNS leak protection, and more. The provider’s “Stealth VPN” feature hides its customers’ VPN usage by disguising it as normal browser traffic.
A strict no-server logs policy ensures that there is no evidence left behind of your online activities. The provider accepts cryptocurrency as subscription payment, keeping your payment information undercover.
PrivateVPN comes up a bit short in the app support department, offering support only for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows devices. With a bit of manual configuration, select routers can also be used with the provider. Browser extensions are currently unavailable.
Up to 10 devices can be simultaneously connected to the provider’s servers.
PrivateVPN’s support options include live chat, a support form, and an FAQ support section.
Pros:
- Disguises your VPN usage

“STEALTHY” VPN PROTECTION:While PrivateVPN’s global server count could stand an increase, its servers are well-distributed around the globe. A handy “Stealth VPN” option keeps customers’ VPN usage hidden. A 30-day money-back guarantee is available.

Methodology for Assessing VPNs to Get an IP Address From Sweden
There are several features to research when you’re looking for the right VPN to grab an IP address from inside Swedish borders.
Here are just some of the features I consider when deciding on which VPN providers to include on this list.
- Connection speeds: A fast internet connection is a must for an enjoyable online experience. The VPNs I include on my list all provide speeds that can easily handle most popular online activities.
- Global server network: A large global server network provides access to geo-fenced content around the globe. The VPN scores bonus points if it has multiple servers in each country, helping to prevent any single server from being overloaded with too many users at once.
- Value: A VPN provider’s true value can be calculated by comparing its asking price against the features it offers. The VPNs on my list offer excellent value.
- Ease of use: Many of us own more than one connected device, making a provider’s native app support important. The VPNs on this list offer intuitive apps for most popular platforms.
- Security and privacy: VPN providers should offer (at the very least) banking-level encryption, kill switch protection, and DNS/IP leak prevention. A strict no-logs policy is also a must.
- Streaming: Streaming is one of the most popular online activities around, a VPN needs to provide access to streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and other streamers.
The list above makes up just some of the features I consider during my all-around VPN testing methodology. This data-driven approach provides insight into each VPN provider, allowing me to recommend only VPNs that meet my readers’ needs.
Why Are International Users Banned From Some Swedish Websites and Services?
Even if you have a subscription to a Swedish site or service, you can’t access it if you’re overseas. You may be wondering why that is.
There’s a reason for this apparent nonsense. It’s because TV and movie studios want to make more money by selling their content in as many locations as possible. So, they add a stipulation into the contracts they sign with streaming providers that they can’t let just anyone access the content – only people in a specific location (in this case, Sweden).
If anyone in the world could access the content they want in Sweden, then TV and movie producers would make no profit by selling their content to providers in different countries. That’s why they include this stipulation.
Take Netflix, for example. The downloadable content that Netflix makes available in one country will differ from what it offers in another. This is because TV and movie producers want to block access from international customers.
It’s been this way for a while, but that doesn’t make it any more bearable when you’re abroad and missing what you used to be able to enjoy online in Sweden.
Unfortunately, video streaming services aren’t the only online services affected. Music streaming services, gaming servers and content, and other websites and services are similarly limited by these restrictions.
Perhaps most importantly, financial servers also restrict access to bank accounts based on international borders. They do this for your own security: If the bank notes that you’re usually active in one area, it’s a big red flag if you suddenly start accessing your account in another country.
Whichever VPN you choose to get, it’s always a good idea to let your bank know when you’ll be out of the country, just in case.
How Is Content Geographically Blocked?
Every device that connects to the internet has an IP address.
This IP address acts as an identifier for your device, letting other devices on the network know where a request came from and where a response needs to go. This makes it similar to a home address, which lets postal carriers know where a package came from and needs to be sent.
Unfortunately, there’s another way that home addresses and IP addresses are alike: They both reveal your physical location. This website lets you see for yourself.
When a site or service in Sweden sees your foreign IP address, it will block you from accessing their content.
How Can I Access Blocked Swedish Content From Overseas?
Thankfully, getting an IP address in Sweden is a simple matter when you use a Virtual Private Network.
By connecting to a VPN provider’s servers in Sweden, you’ll be given a Swedish IP address. So, even if you’re vacationing on the beach in Hawaii, all of the internet will believe you’re really in Sweden.
This will convince streaming and other providers that you’re in Sweden, opening access to all of the sweet, sweet Swedish content you crave.
What Else Can a VPN Do?
A VPN isn’t a one-trick pony, instead, it offers a multitude of benefits.
Besides opening up access to international content, VPNs cover your connection in a blanket of encryption. This inhibits Nosy Nellies like Internet Service Providers (ISPs), hackers, and even governments from spying on your online activities.
Another benefit of this encryption is that it prevents ISPs from throttling your connection speeds. ISPs have been known to throttle connection speeds of users who are participating in online activities that they don’t approve of, like file sharing or streaming from certain services. But since a VPN’s encryption hides your activities, ISPs can’t throttle.
Public WiFi hotspots will also prove to be no problem when you use a VPN. You may not be aware of this, but when you use a public WiFi hotspot without a VPN’s protection, you’re wide open to a hacker’s attack. But with a VPN’s encryption, hackers will be unable to interfere with or monitor your online travels.
Can I Use a Free VPN Provider to Gain Access to Indonesian Content?
You might think that a free VPN is a good alternative to a paid VPN, but trust me, they’re not.
There are three areas where free VPNs are the most problematic: Its inconvenience, its lack of sufficient performance, and most importantly, its privacy violations.
First: Inconvenience. Free VPNs are incredibly inconvenient. Usually, you’ll have to wait in a queue behind other users before you’re allowed to connect to any of the free VPN provider’s servers. Then, when you’re finally given the chance to connect, you’ll find your server options are severely limited, if you’re given any choice of server at all.
What happens when Sweden isn’t available?
Next: Performance. Quality paid VPNs never throttle your connection speeds, and they don’t impose daily or monthly data caps on your usage. Free VPNs do both.
Finally: Privacy violations. Free VPNs can’t operate if there’s no money coming in, so they have to find a way to pay the bills somehow. They do this by monitoring your online travels and selling that information to interested parties, such as advertisers.
They also insert unwanted ads and tracking cookies into your browsing sessions for another quick buck.
The reasons not to use a free VPN provider are pretty much endless. Save yourself the trouble and use a paid VPN provider instead.
IP Address from Sweden FAQs
Is Using a VPN to Access Sweden Content Legal?
It’s legal to use a VPN in Sweden, and there’s no law against using a VPN to access Swedish content from abroad.
Is Using a Swedish Proxy a Good Idea?
No, it’s not a good idea to use a proxy to access Swedish content from abroad.
Although a proxy can grant you access to Swedish content, it won’t encrypt your internet connection like a VPN will. This leaves you open to hackers stealing your personal information, or governments and ISPs spying on your every online move. Choose a VPN over a proxy every time.
How Can I Check if My VPN Service Has Allocated Me a Swedish IP Address Correctly?
You can always check the What Is My IP Address website to see what your current IP address is.
If it shows that your IP address is a Swedish one, then you know your VPN is working correctly. If it shows an IP address outside of Sweden, and you’re sure you connected to a VPN server in Sweden, contact your VPN service’s customer support department.
Conclusion
When it comes to getting a Swedish IP address, you can’t do any better than NordVPN.
NordVPN’s extensive server network includes Sweden and a multitude of other countries, enabling you to access a world of content. The provider’s fast connection speeds are perfect for all kinds of online activities, and you can perform those online activities on most devices. High-end encryption and privacy protections keep you safe and secure.
