IPVanish is an excellent VPN option for internet users looking for fast, well-protected connections, a large global server network, and good app support. The service allows P2P file sharing on its entire network. Unfortunately, its streaming support is hit-and-miss.

VyprVPN offers comprehensive privacy and security protection, leaving behind no evidence of your online antics. While the VPN delivers fast connections, its app support could stand some work. The provider’s asking price is quite reasonable.

In this article, I’ll examine how well two VPN providers, IPVanish and VyprVPN, perform in each important VPN service category. I will look at the providers’ performance in each category, tally the final scores, and then name an overall champion.
When you reach the end of this article, you’ll have more than enough knowledge, allowing you to make an informed VPN buying decision.
Features of IPVanish and VyprVPN
In the sections below, we’ll take a look at the important VPN features you should always consider before making a purchasing decision.
Connection Speeds
A fast internet connection makes your online activities more enjoyable (well, except for paying bills or taxes).
I perform my VPN connection speed tests on a regular basis.
Here’s how I perform the connection speed tests:
- All connection speed tests are performed on a North America-based Windows server boasting a gigabit Ethernet connection.
- I make connections to three VPN server locations – London, New York City, and Hong Kong – at three different times of the day.
- I use the Windows version of the VPN providers’ apps and the app is configured to connect using the Wireguard protocol when the protocol is available.
- I run the Speedtest app after connecting to each VPN server location. I exit and restart the Speedtest app between each test.
Both providers delivered impressively fast connection speeds, with the final results showing one provider outperforms its competitor by a small amount.
IPVanish’s average download speeds came in at an impressive 251.6 Mbps.
VyprVPN’s connection speeds were slightly faster than those delivered by IPVanish, with download speeds of 258.0 Mbps.
Everyone’s connection speeds will differ from what I experienced, as speed test results depend on your usual unprotected connection speeds, your location, and the location of the VPN server used for testing.

Pricing
It seems like just about everything we buy is rising in price on a daily basis. This means you’re likely looking to save a few bucks whenever you can. However, you should be somewhat wary of bargain basement VPNs (and free VPNs), as they don’t always provide all of the protection and features you require.
IPVanish is a quite attractively priced VPN. Its going rate for a monthly subscription (with a one-year commitment) will be about the price of a gallon of gas in California.
VyprVPN’s monthly fee (on a one-year deal) is equivalent to the price of a small cheeseburger combo at your favorite fast food joint. (Unless you’re a vegetarian, then we’ll need to figure out another comparison.)
You’ll notice that I don’t post exact VPN pricing in these articles. That’s because VPNs change their pricing and also run special deals quite regularly. This means that VPN prices quickly become outdated. You can quickly visit a VPN provider’s website to determine its current pricing.

Privacy
When you go online without using a VPN, you leave behind virtual tracks, showing where you’ve been and what you’ve been up to. A VPN’s privacy features keep this from happening.
The following should always be considered when weighing a VPN’s privacy protections:
- Is the provider located in a privacy-friendly country?
- Does the provider save any user logs on its servers?
- Does the provider accept cryptocurrency as payment?
IPVanish is located in the United States. While the U.S. isn’t the most privacy-respecting country around, the provider follows a strict, self-imposed “no logs” policy. Unfortunately, the provider does not accept any form of cryptocurrency.
VyprVPN is based in privacy-loving Switzerland, and as such keeps no user logs on its servers. Unfortunately, this provider also does not accept cryptocurrency.

Security
A VPN works in real-time to keep your travels undercover, preventing you from being tracked by outsiders while you’re using the internet. A VPN not only encrypts your internet connection, but it also temporarily assigns a fresh IP address to your connected device, hiding your online travels and associated antics.
IPVanish’s connection protocol selection includes the WireGuard, OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP/IPSec protocols to protect your internet connection. Kill switch protection is available, as is IPv6 leak and DNS leak protection. A “scramble” option helps disguise VPN traffic as normal internet traffic.
VyprVPN’s use of military-level encryption and a kill switch keep its users’ online antics incognito. WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, and PPTP are among the provider’s connection protocol offerings. VyprVPN also offers a “scramble” feature of sorts, as its Chameleon protocol disguises your VPN traffic as normal browsing activity.

Simultaneous Connections
If you own multiple connected devices you likely use more than one of those devices at once. This makes a VPN provider with a large simultaneous connections allowance an important feature to consider.
Both IPVanish and VyprVPN place limits on simultaneous connections, limiting customers to 10 simultaneous connections.
While some users could find the providers’ connection restrictions a bit limiting, most users will likely find the allowances to be sufficient for their needs.

Streaming Support
There are hundreds of streaming services these days. However, even if you were to subscribe to every available streamer, you’d still not get all that you could from your subscriptions. This is because there are geographic restrictions on the streaming content.
Happily, a VPN opens up access to streaming services around the globe. It does this by temporarily assigning a fresh IP address to your connected device, making it appear to the rest of the internet that you and your device are located inside another country. This opens up access to streaming content you might normally be blocked from viewing.
IPVanish’s ability to unblock streaming providers is limited. While I was able to watch Netflix and HBO Max content while connected to U.S.-based IPVanish servers, the provider failed when I attempted to view BBC iPlayer or Netflix UK content by connecting to a UK server.
VyprVPN provides reliable access to various streaming services, including Netflix US, Netflix UK, Netflix Canada, MLB.tv, DAZN, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, ESPN, and more.

BitTorrent Support
BitTorrent is an efficient way to share files with other internet users. File sharing is legal in most countries – many legitimate companies and groups use P2P to share files among their employees and members. However, ISPs will immediately throttle or block their users’ internet connections when they detect P2P activity (legal or not).
ISPs do this, as it’s illegal to share copyrighted materials. This means the movie and music industries put pressure on ISPs to block file sharing.
A VPN helps you avoid your ISP’s roadblocks in two ways. It encrypts your internet connection, keeping your online activities hidden, while it also temporarily assigns a new IP address to your connected device. This is how a VPN prevents anyone from tracking your activities back to you.

Global Server Coverage
The importance of a VPN provider’s global server coverage can vary. If you’re looking to access geo-fenced content around the globe, you’ll want to look for a provider with a large global server network. If you’re simply looking to keep your online activities incognito, a small server network may be acceptable.
In addition to network size, also pay attention to how many servers the provider has stationed in each country. This helps prevent any one server from being overrun by too many connections at once.

It’s likely that you own more than one internet-capable device and it’s quite possible that those devices all run different operating systems. This makes a VPN provider’s native app support an important consideration.
IPVanish’s native app support includes options for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire TV devices. The provider also provides instructions for setting up a VPN on Linux, Chrome OS machines, and select routers.
VyprVPN’s native app support includes apps for the Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows device platforms. Linux devices can be protected with a bit of manual set up. Both of these VPNs are easy to use while providing reliable protection. However, you may still have a question now and then.
VyprVPN’s customer service department offers live chat, email support, and a searchable support library.
IPVanish offers support via an online trouble ticket submission form and an easy-to-search support library. In addition, the IPVanish website includes a system status page, as well as a support “bot” chat feature that attempts to answer your questions before connecting you to a support agent when it can’t provide a satisfactory answer.

Both VyprVPN and IPVanish deliver top-notch VPN services. However, one of the VPNs needs to be named the victor.
IPVanish is the overall victor in this tight race, thanks to being tops in the Pricing, Customer Support, and Multi-Platform service columns.
VyprVPN performed the best when it came to Connection Speeds and Streaming Support.
It was a tie in the Privacy, Security, Simultaneous Connections, BitTorrent, and Global Server Coverage columns.
