Although the provider offers reliable VPN services, its connection speeds and global server network could definitely be better.
Choosing a VPN
When in search of a VPN provider, always investigate how well each provider performs in several important service categories.
I’ll be comparing two VPN providers, VyprVPN and Avast Secureline. The VPNs will face off in each service arena, then I’ll add up the scores for both competitors and declare a victor.
By the time you finish this article, you should have more than enough information to make a well-informed buying decision.
VyprVPN vs Avast Secureline – Features
In this section, I’ll be listing the VPN features you should always research before buying a VPN subscription. I’ll explain why each category is important and then declare a winner for that service category.
Connection Speeds
A fast internet connection is one of your best friends. Whether you’re streaming video, playing games online, or sharing files, a fast connection makes it better.
I conduct VPN connection speed tests on a regular basis. I perform the tests as follows:
- A North American Windows server with a gigabit Ethernet connection is used for the testing.
- I connect to three different VPN servers – located in London, New York City, and Hong Kong – at three different times of the day.
- I use the Windows versions of the VPN providers’ apps, configured to connect using the Wireguard protocol when it is available.
- I use the Speedtest app to measure download speeds after connecting to each VPN server location. I restart the Speedtest app after each speed test.
While both VPN services delivered adequate speeds, one provider outperformed its competitor by nearly four times.
VyprVPN’s blazing download speeds measured at 258.0 Mbps. These speeds make the provider an excellent choice for users that enjoy streaming 4K video, playing fast-moving games, and more.
Meanwhile, Avast Secureline provided average download speeds of 32.6 Mbps. While this should be more than fast enough to handle your favorite online activities, you may see some extended buffering when streaming HD and 4K video.
Your connection speed test results will most likely be different from mine, as your VPN connection speeds depend on your usual ISP-provided connection speeds, where you’re located, and where the VPN server you select is located.

Pricing
The price of everyday necessities is rising (by everyday necessities, I mean carryout food, streaming subscriptions, and video games), so we’re all looking to save a buck or two. Unfortunately, this may lead to you concentrating more than you should on a VPN’s price.

Privacy
If you go online without a VPN, you leave behind a trail of evidence that allows outsiders to see what you’ve been up to online. This makes a VPN’s privacy protections an important consideration.
Consider the following when researching a VPN’s privacy protections:
- Is the provider located in an online privacy-friendly country?
- Does the provider save any user logs on its servers?
- Does the provider accept cryptocurrency as payment?
VyprVPN is based in Switzerland and takes full advantage of that country’s excellent privacy laws, keeping no user logs of any kind on its servers. Unfortunately, VyprVPN doesn’t accept any type of cryptocurrency.
Czech Republic-based Avast Secureline VPN also saves no user activity logs. However, they do record their users’ actual IP address, the temporary IP address their device was assigned, the start and end times of the VPN session, and how much data the user used during their VPN session. Avast Secureline VPN also does not accept cryptocurrency.

Security
A VPN protects you while you’re online, meaning outsiders can’t track you in real time. A VPN offers encrypted connections, as well as a fresh (temporary) IP address for your connected device. All of this keeps your current online travels undercover.
VyprVPN uses military-level encryption to protect its users’ online travels, as well as a kill switch. The provider uses the WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, and PPTP protocols. In addition, premium users have access to the company’s proprietary Chameleon protocol, which disguises your VPN usage as normal internet traffic.

Simultaneous Connections
If you’re like me, you own more than one connected device, and you use many of those devices at the same time. This makes a VPN provider’s simultaneous connections allowance an important consideration.
VyprVPN allows up to 10 simultaneous connections to its servers.
Meanwhile, Avast Secureline also allows up to 10 concurrent connections.

Streaming Support
If you’re like me, you subscribe to way too many streaming services. And, if you’re not using a VPN, you’re not getting everything that you could out of those expensive streaming subscriptions, as streaming services restrict their content to viewing in designated countries.
A VPN can temporarily assign a new IP address to your connected device, making it look as if your device is connecting to the internet from another area of the world. This opens up access to streaming content that is usually limited to viewers located in that country.
VyprVPN delivers access to quite a few streaming services, including Netflix US, Netflix UK, Netflix Canada, MLB.tv, DAZN, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, ESPN, and others.
Avast Secureline has streaming-optimized servers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, which all worked well to unblock Netflix in those countries. The provider did not offer access to the other streaming services I tried.

BitTorrent Support
BitTorrent is a popular way to share files over the internet. File sharing is legal in most areas of the world (with numerous reputable companies using P2P to share files among their employees). However, many ISPs will immediately throttle or block your internet connection if they detect that you are sharing files.
This is because it’s illegal to share copyrighted materials. The entertainment industry puts pressure on ISPs to block BitTorrenting activity. This has led to ISPs throttling or blocking your connection, no matter what files you’re sharing.
A VPN not only encrypts your internet connection, it temporarily assigns a new IP address to your connected device. This prevents your ISP or anyone else from seeing that you’re sharing files and no one can trace your P2P activity back to you.
Avast Secureline allows BitTorrenting on eight “P2P” servers in six countries.
VyprVPN also allows the activity on its server network.

Global Server Coverage
As I mentioned above, streaming services limit access to their content. Some financial websites and services will also block access to accounts from outside of the customer’s recorded country. A VPN with a large global server network helps you in both situations.
Also, look for a provider with multiple servers in each country. This helps ensure that a single server won’t be hit by too many users connecting at once.
Avast Secureline VPN has 700+ servers in close to 35 countries.
VyprVPN also boasts a decent-sized global server network, with 700+ servers located in 80+ countries.

It seems as if everything is connected to the internet these days. And all of those devices seem to run different operating systems. That’s where a VPN provider’s multi-platform support comes in handy.
VyprVPN offers native app support for Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, and Windows device platforms. A Chrome browser extension is also available, as is compatibility with select routers. (Pre-configured routers are available through Flashrouters.com.)
Avast Secureline provides app support for macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Android TV devices. Chrome and Firefox extensions are also available. However, Linux and router support do not make an appearance.

While both of these VPNs are reliable and easy to use, you may have questions about the service from time to time.
Avast Secureline support options include email support, a searchable support library, and a user forum – all for its paying customers. Avast also makes a “Total Care” phone support number available, which is somewhat unusual in the VPN industry.
VyprVPN also offers always-available support, with live chat, email support, and a searchable support library.

VyprVPN and Avast Secureline VPN both provide reliable VPN protection and services. However, in the spirit of every “versus” article ever, we must name an overall winner.
