At a Glance
Netflix has increased its subscription rates several times over the past seven years or so. The price increases can vary from country to country, as does the number of titles in each country’s content library.
In this article, I’ll take a look at Netflix’s pricing around the globe, as well as the library size of each country’s offering. This way, we can determine which country’s Netflix subscribers get the best bang for the buck. I’ll also tell you how to get more out of your Netflix subscription.
Is Netflix Good Value in Your Country?
PLEASE NOTE: The prices included in this article are the base prices as advertised by Netflix. The amounts do not include any taxes or other charges users may be required to pay. The pricing and the number of titles in each country’s Netflix library are as of the date of this article. The current numbers may be different.
When gathering this data, I looked at several factors.
I examined the figures of the number of TV episodes and films available in 108 countries around the globe, as listed by uNoGS and JustWatch. I then divided the monthly subscription price in each country by the number of available titles in that country to determine that country’s cost per title. To account for the plans that allow multiple users (the standard and premium plans allow two and four users, respectively), we multiplied the library total by this to determine the number of titles available to all users.
I also evaluated the cost per month for each country and then compared them against the other countries (all comparisons are based on the current exchange rates at the time of writing). I also took a close look at the 13 countries where Netflix offers ad-based subscriptions (Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Guernsey, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, South Korea, UK, and the US at the time of this writing) to determine how those plans compare.
The Results?
The results of my study show a massive difference in cost per title between different countries, no matter which plan you subscribe to.
Top 10 Countries Where Netflix is Good Value For Money
Egypt, India, and Pakistan are the most cost-effective countries in which to watch Netflix, thanks to the budget-friendly pricing for no-ad plans in those three countries. These three countries enjoy impressively large content libraries, meaning they have the best content-to-pricing ratio.
While the average global cost per title for Netflix’s basic plan is $0.00115, Egyptians, Pakistanis, and Indians pay just $0.00022, $0.00024, and $0.00035 per title respectively thanks to having content libraries with over 6,600 titles each. This makes the cost per title for these countries five times cheaper than on average, and an amazing 22 times cheaper per title than the most expensive country. If you must know, Guernsey costs the most per title at $0.00473 each (they have a library of only 2,172 titles).

The 10 Places Where Netflix Isn’t Good Value For Money
Now it’s time to take a look at the other end of the value spectrum. There are several countries where Netflix viewers pay through the nose per episode or per movie. This low-value proposition is due to either high monthly costs (like in Switzerland and Liechtenstein) or because the country’s libraries are undersized (like in Zambia, Seychelles, and Uganda).
Guernsey, Uganda, and Seychelles are at the bottom of the rankings across all of the Netflix plans, with costs per title across basic plans are $0.00473, $0.00267, and $0.00240 respectively. This is as much as four times more than the average cost of $0.00115 per title.
If we take these countries with less than 2,000 titles in their library out of the equation, we see Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and French Guiana become the least countries with the worst value per title.
At 12.90 CHF ($14.34 USD) per month for a basic plan (more than double the average of $6.68) in Liechtenstein and Switzerland, these two countries are paying dearly to gain access to a library a bit larger than average (Switzerland has 7,541 titles and Liechtenstein has 7,921). As for French Guiana, it offers only 100 more titles than average (6,419), for a monthly rate that is close to twice the average ($11.90).
Worse still, Netflix no longer offers its basic plan to new subscribers in Liechtenstein and Switzerland (only existing basic plan subscribers can still opt for the plan) and the two countries’ standard and premium plan prices have recently seen increases of 2x and 3x respectively. This means you can expect to pay 20.90 CHF (or $23.24) or 27.90 CHF ($31.02) each month as a new Netflix subscriber in these countries. That’s right, it’s either a month of Netflix or a Big Mac Combo at the McDonald’s on the Connecticut Turnpike. Totally your call.
U.S. Netflix subscribers have faced periodic increases in their subscriptions over the last five years or so. This has led to the U.S. being one of the least cost-effective countries across all Netflix plans. This is due to the U.S. enjoying only an average-sized library while paying above-average monthly costs. This means the U.S. ranks as the eleventh, twenty-first, and seventeenth least cost-effective country for the basic, standard, and premium Netflix plans respectively.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom sits in the middle of the pack for its basic and standard plans but ranks way down in 26th place when it comes to the cost-effectiveness of its premium plan.

Is It Worth It to Opt for a Netflix Plan With Ads?
I think I can safely say that one of the things that make streaming services attractive to many viewers is the lack of ads. Well, at least until recently. Several streaming services are offering cheaper levels if you’re willing to watch ads, Netflix included.
So, is it worth opting for a Netflix plan with ads? Do they offer the best value when compared to basic plans without ads?

Netflix subscribers living in the 13 countries listed above are getting a decent deal when it comes to cost per title when opting for the standard plan with ads. However, as you can see, viewers in some countries get a better deal than others.
If you reside in one of the more expensive countries, Guernsey comes to mind, you’ll save the most per title (nearly $0.0018 per title) if you opt for the standard with ads plan. If you’re in a country like Brazil, you’ll only save a fourth of what Guernsey viewers do.
But, when it comes to which countries get the best deal per title, Egypt and Pakistan take the top spot for the most cost-effective basic plans without ads.
The Cheapest Countries To Get Netflix
In this section, we compare all 245 countries where Netflix is available to determine which countries pay the most and which countries pay the least for their Netflix subscriptions on a cost-per-month basis.
Egypt is not only the most economical country when it comes to a cost-per-title basis, the Middle Eastern country is also the most economical country when it comes to cost-per-month.
$1.46, $2.50, and $3.44 per month for a basic, standard, and premium subscription, respectively, is a winning combination for Egyptian users. Globally, Netflix subscribers pay an average of $6.73, $10.32, and $13.59 per month for their basic, standard, and premium Netflix subscriptions. This means Egyptian subscribers are saving as much as $10.15 per subscription!
Meanwhile, Netflix subscribers in the UK and the US pay quite a bit above the global average, with UK viewers paying as much as $9.53 more than the global average with monthly prices of £7.99 ($10.27), £10.99 ($14.12), and £17.99 ($23.12) for basic, standard, and premium plans, respectively. US users pay up to $9.40 more than average with plan prices of $11.99, $15.49, and $22.99 for basic, standard, and premium plans.
However, US and UK Netflix subscribers can take some comfort in the fact that they are not in the two most expensive countries – Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Subscribers in these two countries pay $7.61 above average for basic plans, $12.92 more than average for standard plans, and over $17.43 more than average for premium plans.
How Can I Access Netflix Content In Other Countries?
You can enjoy the same films and shows Netflix viewers in other countries do by using a reliable Virtual Private Network (VPN) provider. Unfortunately, not all VPNs provide reliable access to Netflix streams in other countries. That’s why I tested multiple VPN services to determine the top VPNs for watching Netflix in other countries.
Which VPNs Provide Access To Netflix?
If you’re looking to save a few bucks by subscribing to Netflix in a country where the subscription fee is lower, you will need to use a VPN. This is because streaming services like Netflix check your IP address to determine your physical location. VPNs temporarily assign a fresh IP address to your connected device, making it appear as if you and your device are connecting from another country than the one you’re actually in.
I recommend seven VPNs for use with Netflix. While I’ll provide details about each of the seven VPNs in just a moment, you’ll find a short description of each VPN provider in the list immediately below.

The provider‘s excellent router compatibility includes custom firmware for select routers.
Users can simultaneously connect up to eight devices to ExpressVPN servers on a single set of credentials.
ExpressVPN also offers a “MediaStreamer” DNS service, providing access to Netflix and other streamers on devices like game consoles and smart TVs (be warned that MediaStreamer does not encrypt your internet connection like the provider’s VPN services).
Customer support is always available, thanks to a 24/7 agent chat option, a support ticket system, email, and a searchable support library.
Pros:
- Reliable access to Netflix content
- Around-the-clock customer support
- Keeps your online activities undercover
- Excellent native app support
Cons:
- Priciest VPN on this list
PREMIUM VPN PROTECTION AT A PRICE:ExpressVPN offers reliable access to Netflix and other popular streaming services, while keeping all of your online activities undercover. A large global server network provides fast and well-protected connections. While the provider is more expensive than the other VPNs on this list, a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee allows you to give it a try.

5. CyberGhost
CyberGhost is an attractive option for rookie VPN users. The provider’s easy-to-use apps deliver reliable access to Netflix and other streamers.
The provider’s global server network is made up of thousands of servers, based in 99+ countries around the globe. Several of those servers are optimized for Netflix in several different countries.
CyberGhost’s well-protected connections are more than fast enough to handle HD and 4K streams for streaming services like Netflix. There are no worries about being cut off in mid-stream by data caps or bandwidth limitations.
CyberGhost-provided connections are all protected by banking-grade encryption, along with IPv6 and DNS leak prevention, keeping its customers’ online activities undercover. Blocking of ads, online tackers, and perilous websites is also available. The provider follows a strict “no server logs” policy and accepts Bitcoin as payment, offering privacy in the usage and payment departments.
Native app support from CyberGhost includes offerings for Android, Android TV, iOS, macOS, Linux, Windows, and Amazon Fire devices. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are also available. The provider’s router compatibility allows users to protect all of their connected devices at once if CyberGhost’s seven simultaneous connection allowance isn’t sufficient for your needs.

6. Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access (PIA) is a well-established VPN service, providing top-notch online protection and reliable access to Netflix and other streaming services.
PIA’s global server network includes thousands of servers, stationed in over 90 countries. The large network delivers reliable access to Netflix, as well as several other streaming services around the globe.
The provider allows customers to connect an unlimited number of devices to its servers.
Owners of Android, Android TV, Apple TV, iOS, Windows, macOS, Amazon Fire, and Linux devices. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are available, as is compatibility with select routers.
While PIA’s connections are near the bottom on the connection speed charts, they are still up to handling most popular online activities, including streaming. No data caps or bandwidth throttling to worry about when using PIA.
All of PIA’s protected connections are secure via banking-grade encryption, IP/DNS leak protection, and a kill switch option. Ad, tracker, malware, and dangerous websites can also be blocked.
All PIA servers are run user log-free, and the provider also accepts Bitcoin in return for its services, providing privacy protection for your online activities and payment information. Additional privacy protection is afforded by the provider running all of its servers solely from volatile RAM, which means all data is securely wiped from a PIA server when it is restarted or powered down.
PIA customer support offers live agent chat, a trouble ticket tracking system, and a searchable support library.
Pros:
- Access to Netflix and other streaming services
- Excellent security and privacy
- No data caps or bandwidth throttling

7. PrivateVPN
PrivateVPN may be a bit lacking in the global server network and connection speed arenas but the VPN delivers reliable access to streaming services like Netflix.
The provider’s global server network is spread a bit thin, as it has only a bit more than 200 servers in 60+ countries. However, that network does provide reliable access to geo-fenced content in the countries that it has covered.
While PrivateVPN’s download speeds are the slowest on this list, the provider’s connections can easily handle the streams offered by Netflix and other streaming services. No data caps or bandwidth throttling to deal with when using PrivateVPN.
PrivateVPN-provided connections are well-protected, using banking-grade encryption, kill switch protection, and IPv6/DNS leak prevention to keep your online travels hidden. The provider’s “Stealth VPN” feature disguises your VPN activities as normal browser traffic.
PrivateVPN’s no-user logs policy means there is nothing tying you to your online antics while connected to its servers and the provider also accepts Bitcoin as a private subscription payment option.
Its native app support includes offerings for iOS/iPadOS, Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows platforms. Browser extensions are unavailable. The service is also compatible with select routers.
PrivateVPN customers are allowed to make up to 10 simultaneous connections to its servers.
The provider’s customer support department includes agent chat, a contact form, and a non-searchable “FAQ” help section.
Pros:
- Comprehensive online protection
- Up to 10 concurrent device connections
- Reliable access to Netflix and other streamers
Cons:
- Server network needs expansion
- Connection speeds could also use work
RELIABLE PROTECTION FOR YOUR ONLINE ACTIVITIES:PrivateVPN admittedly comes up a bit short in the server count and connection speed columns. However, the provider scores well when it comes to advanced options, online protection, and reliable access to geo-blocked content. 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to Use a VPN to Access Netflix
It’s easy to use a VPN to access Netflix in other countries and regions.
Just follow these steps:
- Subscribe to a reliable VPN. My top pick is NordVPN and Surfshark is my pick for budget-minded users.
- Install the VPN provider’s app on your favorite connected device(s).
- Connect to a server located in a country where your favorite Netflix content resides.
- Open the Netflix app or website and subscribe using a payment method used in the country you're connecting to (if you’re not already subscribed).
- Enjoy your favorite Netflix shows and movies!
If you continue to see the local version of Netflix, clear your browser and device cookies and browser cache. Then, try again. If you have any issues, contact your VPN’s support department.

The subscription price for a Netflix subscription can vary greatly from country to country. However, by using a VPN, you can subscribe to the service at a lower price. As we’ve also learned, just because a Netflix subscription in a certain country is priced cheaper, it doesn’t necessarily mean the subscription is a good value.
Netflix FAQs
Can I Get Netflix For Free?
No, unlike some other streaming services, Netflix doesn’t offer a free trial period (cocky much, Netflix?). However, you can cancel at any time with no contracts or cancellation fees.
Do Any Free VPNs Work To Unblock Netflix?
I have never found any free VPN that offers reliable access to Netflix (or any other popular streaming service). Free VPNs usually have a small number of servers, making it easy to block those servers’ IP addresses. Freebie providers also do not have the resources to restore access to Netflix when the streaming service blocks the IP addresses they provide.
You’ll also find that free VPN providers as a rule do not provide fast enough connections for an enjoyable streaming experience. Plus, many free VPNs also inflict daily or monthly data caps on their users’ data usage, which can be quickly depleted when streaming HD and 4K video.
Is It Legal To Use a VPN to Stream Netflix From Another Country?
If using a VPN is legal in your country, then it is legal to use a VPN to access Netflix. However, using a VPN to access Netflix is against the streaming service’s terms of use, which state:
“You may view Netflix content primarily within the country in which you have established your account and only in geographic locations where we offer our service and have licensed such content. The content that may be available to watch will vary by geographic location and will change from time to time.”
[...]
“You also agree not to circumvent, remove, alter, deactivate, degrade or thwart any of the content protections in the Netflix service; use any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means to access the Netflix service... We may terminate or restrict your use of our service if you violate these Terms of Use or are engaged in illegal or fraudulent use of the service.”
This can be interpreted as not allowing the use of a VPN with Netflix. That’s why it is important to use a reliable VPN provider (like NordVPN) that does a good job of flying under Netflix’s radar.
