There doesn’t appear to be a Freedom on the Net page for the Czech Republic on Freedom House, but the country’s Freedom in the World 2020 score is 91/100 (0 = least free, 100 = most free), meaning the country scores well in the freedom category.
There’s very little internet censorship in the Czech Republic. In fact, the nation is ranked as having the 23rd lowest rate of internet censorship. openDemocracy essentially states that the Czech Republic doesn’t have the infrastructure to conduct mass surveillance.
While the Data Retention Directive in the EU requires all member countries’ Internet Service Providers to save internet data for 6 to 12 months, the Czech Republic ruled this as unconstitutional, and so doesn’t follow the mandate.
So, in the Czech Republic, you don’t have to worry much about the government monitoring your online activities, which is a relief.
However, as is true of all countries, when you’re in the Czech Republic, you’re only able to access Czech content. That means that streaming, gaming and other types of content housed in other countries isn’t available to you. Likewise, if you’re outside of the Czech Republic, Czech content will be unavailable to you.
To protect your internet connection from monitoring (by hackers, if not by the government) and open access to content outside of the Czech Republic (or inside the Czech Republic, if you’re abroad), you need a Virtual Private Network.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) cover your internet connection in a blanket of encryption, keeping it safe from any prying eyes trying to monitor your online activities. In addition, a VPN service gives you a new IP address, so you can access geo-blocked content all over the world.
In this article, I review the top 5 best VPNs for the Czech Republic.
Best VPNs for the Czech Republic
As always, I thoroughly tested many VPN services with the intention of figuring out which ones were the best for the Czech Republic.
Below, you’ll find a short rundown of the best 5 VPNs for the Czech Republic.

When it comes to streaming, ExpressVPN takes the cake.
encryption. The provider’s upcoming “Lightway” protocol is said to enhance speed as well as security.
You’ll never have to worry about your privacy when using ExpressVPN. The provider never saves any logs of your online activities and allows you to pay with the privacy-protecting Bitcoin cryptocurrency.
The provider’s “TrustedServer” technology also runs all operations in RAM, which means that all of your data is wiped whenever the server is rebooted. This means that none of your data is ever saved to a hard drive.
ExpressVPN’s 3,000 servers cover the globe in 90+ countries, the Czech Republic included.
The provider’s fast download speeds are perfect for streaming content from anywhere in the world, as well as gaming and torrenting.

CyberGhost’s simple apps provide comprehensive protection, so VPN newbies won’t have to deal with complicated settings to get the service they need.
CyberGhost takes your security seriously, offering government-grade encryption, kill switch protection, DNS leak protection, and malicious website and ad blocking. Also available is the ability to force websites to open the HTTPS versions of their pages when available.

IPVanish offers unlimited simultaneous connections, as well as a privacy protection you won’t find from other providers.
Solid security protections are a staple with IPVanish, as the provider offers bank-grade encryption, a kill switch with an auto-reconnect ability, and a “scramble” feature, which disguises your VPN traffic as normal internet traffic.
While IPVanish never saves any logs of your internet travels, they sadly do not let you pay with Bitcoin.
Remember that extra privacy protection I mentioned? IPVanish owns and operates all of its servers instead of leasing them, which means that nosy third-party contractors will never have the chance to check out your data.
You can connect to any of 1,500+ servers in 54+ countries. 11 of those servers are located in Prague.
Your connections are sure to be fast when using IPVanish, so you can stream, game and share files without a problem.
Native apps are available for the macOS, Android, iOS, Windows, Amazon Fire and Chrome OS devices. Manual setup is possible for Linux and Raspberry Pi. IPVanish offers support for many routers, but unfortunately does not offer browser extensions.
You can connect as many devices as you like to IPVanish’s servers at once thanks to the provider’s unlimited simultaneous connections policy.

How to Use a VPN to Connect to the Czech Republic
Czechs looking to protect and enhance their internet connections with a VPN need only follow a few simple steps:
- Subscribe to a VPN provider (I suggest NordVPN).
- Download and install the VPN provider’s app(s) on your device(s).
- Log into the VPN app.
- Select and connect to a server in the Czech Republic, or elsewhere, if you prefer connecting to an international location.
- Enjoy a free and protected internet experience!
Can I Use a Free VPN to Access Czech Content?
I seriously advise against using a free VPN for any purpose, including to access Czech content.
First, let’s consider how inconvenient a free VPN is. Free VPN providers often make you wait in a queue behind other users who want to use the service. Once you’re finally allowed to connect, your choice of servers will be small, and you may not even get the chance to select a server location at all.
If you’re looking to access content in the Czech Republic, you’ll more than likely be disappointed.
You can also expect the freebie VPN to throttle your connection speeds mercilessly, and you may run into daily or monthly data caps, ending your online adventures prematurely.
Paid VPNs take your privacy seriously – free VPNs do not. That’s why they often monitor your online activities in order to sell your personal data to interested third parties, like advertisers (or worse).
That’s in addition to sometimes inserting unwanted ads and tracking cookies into your browsing sessions.
Avoid free VPN providers like the plague – you’ll be glad you did.
VPNs for Czech Republic FAQ
Which VPN Is Best for Netflix in the Czech Republic?
NordVPN and ExpressVPN are both stars when it comes to unblocking international content, including Netflix in the Czech Republic. However, I would suggest NordVPN over ExpressVPN, since it’s more reasonably priced and offers the fastest connection speeds of any VPN provider I’ve tested, meaning you can watch Czech Netflix in HD or 4K.
Is It a Good Idea to Use a VPN if I Live in the Czech Republic?
While the Czech Republic doesn’t conduct mass monitoring of its citizens’ online activities and doesn’t censor much internet content, it’s always good to use a VPN to protect yourself against hackers. In addition, not all content available in the world is available in the Czech Republic, so a VPN is good to use to unblock content located in other countries.
Can I Access Worldwide Banking Services With a VPN From the Czech Republic?
Generally speaking, you’ll need to connect to the internet in whichever country you have a bank account in to access your bank account. If your bank account is in the Czech Republic, then connecting to a VPN server in the Czech Republic will allow you to access your account.
The best VPN to use while visiting or residing in the Czech Republic is NordVPN.
NordVPN has a long history of providing stellar service to its customers. From offering the fastest connection speeds you can find, to protecting your privacy and security thoroughly, to providing always-available customer support and apps for all your favorite devices, NordVPN makes for an exceptional choice.
