Choosing a VPN

Before making a decision about any VPN provider, investigate how well the provider performs in each important VPN category.

In this article, I’ll be taking a close look at two VPN providers, CyberGhost and VyprVPN, assessing how well both VPNs perform in each service category. I will name a victor for each category, tally the scores, and declare an overall winner.

By the end of this article, you’ll have plenty of knowledge and will be able to make an informed VPN buying decision.

Features of CyberGhost and VyprVPN

In the sections that follow, we’ll take a look at the important features you should be considering before making a VPN subscription purchase.

Connection Speeds

A fast connection makes your online activities smoother and more enjoyable. Whether it’s streaming, gaming, or sharing files, a fast connection makes things better.

I perform my VPN connection speed tests on a regular basis. Here’s how I perform the tests:

  1. My connection speed tests are performed using a North American Windows server with a gigabit Ethernet connection.
  2. Connections are made to three VPN servers, which are located in London, New York City, and Hong Kong, at three different times of the day.
  3. I test using the Windows version of the VPN providers’ apps and the app is configured to connect using the Wireguard protocol when available.
  4. I run the Speedtest app after connecting to each VPN server location, exiting and restarting the Speedtest app between each speed test.

While both providers delivered above-average connection speeds, one provider delivered connection speeds close to double the speeds that its competitor delivered.

CyberGhost delivered blazing download speeds of 296.1 Mbps.

VyprVPN delivered connection speeds that are slightly slower than CyberGhost, with download speeds of 258.0 Mbps.

Your connection speed results will differ from mine, as your results will depend on your unprotected connection speeds, your physical location, and the location of the selected VPN server.

Pricing

The prices for necessities like groceries, gas, and video games are rising on what seems like a daily basis, so it’s a good idea to save a few bucks whenever you can. However, bargain basement VPNs (and free VPNs) don’t always provide all of the protection and features you need. This is why it is important to compare a provider’s features to its price to determine its true value.

CyberGhost’s monthly tariff is a buck less than a double cheeseburger from McDowells (or any other place with a golden arch out in front).

VyprVPN’s monthly fee is equivalent to the price of a small double cheeseburger combo at that same fast food joint.

I never post exact VPN pricing in my articles. VPNs change their pricing and run special deals on a regular basis, so VPN pricing quickly becomes outdated. Visit a VPN provider’s website to determine its current pricing.

Privacy

When you go online without VPN protection, you leave behind evidence of what you’ve been up to online. A VPN’s privacy features prevent this from happening.

Always consider the following when investigating a VPN’s privacy protections:

  • Is the provider located in a privacy-friendly country?
  • Does the provider save any user logs on its servers?
  • Does the provider accept cryptocurrency as payment?

Romanian provider CyberGhost saves no user logs of any kind and Bitcoin is available as a private payment option.

VyprVPN is based in Switzerland, and also keeps no user logs on its servers. Unfortunately, VyprVPN also does not accept cryptocurrency.

Security

If you go online without a VPN to keep your travels undercover, you can be tracked by outsiders while you use the internet. Luckily, a VPN encrypts your connection, while also temporarily giving a new IP address to your connected device, keeping your online antics incognito.

CyberGhost protects its customers’ connections with military-grade encryption, kill switch protection, DNS leak prevention, and IPv6 leak prevention. Available connection protocols include Wireguard, OpenVPN with TCP/UDP, IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP/IPSec. Blocking of ads, malicious websites, and online tracking is also available.

VyprVPN also makes use of military-level encryption and a kill switch to keep its users’ online travels undercover. WireGuard, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, and PPTP are included among the provider’s connection protocol offerings. VyprVPN’s proprietary Chameleon protocol disguises your VPN traffic as normal browsing activity.

Simultaneous Connections

I’d venture to say that many of us own multiple connected devices and many of us probably use more than one of those devices at once. This means that a VPN provider with a large simultaneous connections allowance is an excellent asset.

VyprVPN puts a 10-simultaneous connection limit on connections to its servers.

Meanwhile, CyberGhost allows up to seven simultaneous connections.

If you have a large family or your own business, both connection allowances could be a bit limiting. However, most users will likely find the providers’ connection allowances to be sufficient.

Streaming Support

There are hundreds of available streaming services. But, no matter how many streaming services you subscribe to, you’re not getting all that you could be from your streamers. This is because the services place geographic restrictions on the viewing of their content. This is where a VPN comes in handy.

A VPN opens up access to streaming services around the globe by temporarily assigning a fresh IP address to your connected device. This useful trick makes it appear to the rest of the internet that you and your device are connecting from inside another country. This allows you to access streaming content that is normally limited to viewers in that nation.

CyberGhost provides reliable access to numerous streaming providers. The provider also offers streaming-optimized servers that are designed to provide one-click access to content from many of those streamers, including Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, ESPN+, and multiple others.

VyprVPN also provides reliable access to various streamers, including Netflix US, Netflix UK, Netflix Canada, MLB.tv, DAZN, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, ESPN, and more.

BitTorrent Support

BitTorrent is arguably the best way for internet users to share files with other online users. File sharing is legal in most countries and many legitimate organizations make use of P2P to share files among employees. Unfortunately, ISPs are known to throttle or block their users’ internet connections out of hand if they detect file sharing activity.

This happens because it’s illegal to share copyrighted materials, including movies, music, and other materials. The movie and music industries put pressure on ISPs to block file sharing, whether the files being shared are legal or not.

A VPN hides your BitTorrent activities and helps you avoid your ISP’s roadblocks in two ways. First, it encrypts your internet connection, keeping your online activities hidden. It also temporarily assigns a new IP address to your connected device, which prevents anyone from tracking your activities back to your machine.

VyprVPN allows BitTorrenting activity on its entire global server network.

CyberGhost allows P2P activity on its servers in 30+ countries. The provider’s app indicates the countries where P2P activity is allowed. The servers in these locations are optimized for file sharing and downloading.

BitTorrenting Winner: It’s a tie. Both VPNs allow file sharing

Global Server Coverage

The importance of a VPN provider’s global server coverage can vary, depending on what you plan on doing with it.

If you’re simply looking to keep your online travels private, the size of the network would matter less. However, for users looking to access international content, a large VPN server network is quite important.

You should also look for a provider that has multiple servers stationed in each country. This helps prevent a single server from being hit by too many connections at once.

VyprVPN’s global server network boasts 700+ servers in 80+ countries.

CyberGhost has 9,000+ servers placed in 90+ countries.

Multi-Platform Support

Many of us own more than one connected device and there is a good chance that those devices all run different operating systems. This makes it important to be sure the VPN provider offers native support for the devices you use.

CyberGhost’s native app support includes offerings for Android, Android TV, iOS, macOS, Linux, Amazon Fire, and Windows devices. Browser extensions are available for Firefox and Chrome browsers. Support is also available for routers, with pre-configured routers available through Flashrouters.com.

VyprVPN’s native app support offering includes options for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows device platforms. Linux devices can be protected with a bit of manual set up. A Chrome browser extension is available, as is compatibility with select routers, with ready-to-go routers available through Flashrouters.

Customer Support

Both of these VPNs are reliable and intuitive. However, you are still likely to have occasional questions about them.

CyberGhost support options include a 24/7 live chat option, a support request form, and a searchable knowledge base.

CyberGhost

CyberGhost is the overall victor in this battle, thanks to being tops in the Connection Speeds, Pricing, Privacy, Global Server Coverage, and Multi-Platform service columns.

VyprVPN performed the best in just one service arena, Simultaneous Connections.
