Geo-blockades also affect music streaming content, gaming servers and content, and other sites and online services.

You should also be aware that financial services are geo-restricted. There is some sense to this: If you usually access your bank account in one country, it’s a red flag when you start accessing it from half a world away, because this could mean that an unauthorized person somehow got your info and is trying to steal from your account.

A VPN service can help you in this regard, making you still appear to be in the Philippines when you’re really in Timbuktu, allowing you to access your account without setting off any alarms. However, this is still risky, and I strongly advise that you tell your bank that you’re leaving the country before you go on that vacation, business trip, etc.

How Is Content Geographically Blocked?

The way content is geographically blocked has to do with your IP address.

Every internet-connected device is assigned an IP address. This IP address identifies your device on a network (in this case, the internet) and lets other devices know where a request came from and where a response needs to go.

Home addresses are the same, but for physical mail. Just like how a home address lets the post office know where mail came from and needs to go, so an IP address lets the internet know where requests came from and responses need to go.

IP addresses are assigned based on country, so your device’s IP address lets the internet world know your physical location.

Once your streaming provider sees that you’re using a foreign IP address instead of a local IP address, they’ll block you immediately.
