BulletVPN Review & Test Results – Does it Measure Up in 2024?

In this review, I take a look at the Virtual Private Network offering from BulletVPN. I’ll tell you how well the service accesses popular streaming services, what type of protection it offers, and more.

BulletVPN bills itself as the “Fast and Secure VPN” and claims to offer the ability to “Stream Anonymously With No Limits.

BulletVPN is headquartered in Estonia, which is not part of any “eyes” agreements.

In this review, I’ll be putting BulletVPN through its paces, taking a look at its service offerings, its online security and privacy protections, and how much it slows down your connections. I’ll also investigate the size of its global server network, which streaming services it offers access to, and which devices it offers native protection for.

I will then deliver my verdict on the provider and how well its services measure up against other VPN providers, including my #1 provider, NordVPN.

Is BulletVPN Right for You?

BulletVPN offers reliable protection for all of your online activities. Unfortunately, the provider lacks an extensive global server network, and its connections could certainly be faster.

While the provider offers reliable access to Netflix in the U.S. and the other countries I tested, its access to other streaming services is hit-and-miss.

The provider offers native app support for most popular device platforms, and a smart DNS service for use with gaming consoles, set-top streaming boxes, and smart TVs.

The provider’s single-month and six-month subscription offerings are priced a bit more expensively than those of many other providers, although its three-year pricing is quite reasonable.

BulletVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, matching many other popular providers’ policies.

While BulletVPN’s service is acceptable, there are better VPN options available, including my #1 pick, NordVPN.

NordVPN offers a no-risk, 30-day money-back guarantee, fast connections, optimal online security and privacy, and much more.

My Verdict

BulletVPN offers reliable online security and privacy, but online users can get more for their money from other providers. The provider slows down connections a bit more than I’d like to see, and its less-than-optimal global server coverage means you’ll miss out on quite a bit of what Netflix and other streaming services offer.

If you’re looking for optimal VPN service, excellent connection speeds, top-notch streaming access, and all-around app support, take a look at other VPN providers, like my top VPN, NordVPN.

Features

BulletVPN, while providing reliable online security and privacy, comes up lacking in the global server coverage and connection speed categories.

The provider offers app support for most popular device platforms, including Android, Android TV, Amazon Fire, iOS, macOS, and Windows platforms. The provider can also be set up manually on Linux and Raspberry Pi devices, as well as on various popular routers, including DD-WRT, Tomato, TP-Link, Asus, and several others. Unfortunately, browser extensions are not available.

New users will likely appreciate the provider’s apps due to their one-click access to servers, and the provider’s designating of streaming-optimized servers.

BulletVPN customers can connect up to six supported devices on a single set of login credentials.

The provider offers the ability to use the PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN, IKEv1, and IKEv2 protocols.

The provider’s global server network, at the time of this article, is a somewhat limited 155+ servers in 55+ countries.

While P2P is allowed on all servers, the provider suggests that online users limit their file-sharing activity to servers based in Spain, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

Customer support is limited to a “Contact Us” button at the bottom of each page that sends an email to support, and a searchable support section that includes sections for setup guides, troubleshooting, and FAQs covering various subjects. When I sent an inquiry via the contact form, support replied in less than three hours.

Streaming

Gaining internet access to geo-blocked streaming service content is arguably one of the most popular reasons for VPN use.

In the early days of both the streaming and VPN industries, it was a golden time for VPN users. Just about any VPN service provider could access streaming content from other regions of the world, greatly increasing the value of streaming fans’ subscriptions.

However, it didn’t take long for Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and most other streaming services to catch on to this trick, and they began blocking IP addresses that VPN services provide from accessing their geo-blocked content libraries.

This caused many VPN providers to give up on offering access to geo-blocked streaming content, instead concentrating on promoting increased connection protection. However, some other providers – such as NordVPN, Surfshark, and others – continue to fight the good fight, re-establishing access via new IP addresses when their IPs are blocked.

BulletVPN streaming service access is a mixed bag. The provider offered reliable access to Netflix in the countries I tested (the U.S., the U.K., and France), as well as BBC iPlayer in the U.K. and Hulu in the U.S. However, it came up short when I tried Amazon Prime Video (it didn’t work in any of the three countries I tested).

The provider’s network proved to slow down my connection by a good amount (up to 60% in some cases). However, when it came to streaming, the provider performed well with Netflix and Hulu, providing smooth HD streaming with little to no buffering.

While BBC iPlayer worked, it did buffer for around 15 seconds on average, and then offered a sub-DVD experience, with fuzziness and pixelization for a good part of the video stream.

Security and Privacy

BulletVPN offers multiple connection protocols for customers to use: PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN, IKEv1, and IKEv2.

The provider doesn’t offer a lot of extra features – instead, it concentrates on offering well-protected access to streaming and other online services.

“Extras” are limited to a kill switch and a “BulletShield” feature that the provider describes as “an additional security measure that will restrict your device’s ability to access the internet to the VPN connection. You will not be connected to the internet unless you are connected through one of our VPN servers.”

One value-added service is the provider’s smart DNS service, which is included in the price of the VPN service. It allows game consoles, set-top boxes, smart TVs, and other devices that do not have app support to access restricted content, but without the VPN encryption that the service normally provides.

BulletVPN’s website shows it as being headquartered in Estonia, which is not part of any “eyes” agreements.

The provider’s privacy policy page states that it doesn’t keep VPN connection logs of any users’ online activity, and cannot link to any other collected information about its online users. BulletVPN never collects any user browsing history, connection history, internet traffic, and data transfer, or DNS queries.

It also doesn’t save any information as to a user’s VPN connection date and time, meaning it cannot supply any of the above information if requested. A Bitcoin payment option keeps your payment information private.

Connection Speeds

BulletVPN’s connection speeds are far from the best in the industry, but can usually handle the HD streams that Netflix and other streaming services provide. It also provides enough oomph for most online games and for file sharing, without slowing your other online activities.

During connection speed testing, my unprotected connection speeds averaged at 333.1 Mbps download speed. When I was connected to BulletVPN’s servers, they averaged just 74.3 Mbps.

Admittedly, those speeds are decent, but they don’t measure up to many other providers, some of which offer much better deals on their subscriptions, meaning more bang for the buck. It should be noted that your speeds will vary, depending on your physical location and the unprotected connection speeds from your Internet Service Provider.

It should also be noted that streaming performance depends on which streamer you’re viewing.

On Netflix, 1080p streams started almost immediately, and playback was smooth and stutter-free. Hulu streams performed similarly. However, when viewing BBC iPlayer, it was like taking a trip back to the early days of streaming, with extended buffering times and a video tape-ish viewing experience.

Ping times did not fare well, increasing by a large amount when connected to BulletVPN servers. I strongly suggest that online gamers take advantage of the provider’s 30-day money-back guarantee to test their favorite games with the provider’s servers.

The provider does not inflict data caps or bandwidth throttling on its users.

Cost

BulletVPN offers one level of service, but for three different time lengths. Users have a choice of a single-month option, as well as six-month and three-year extended subscription options.

If you opt for a month-to-month subscription, you’ll pay a few bucks more per month than you do for a basic Netflix subscription. The six months option will save 17% over the one-month option, while the three-year plan will save 78%.

If you’re a bargain hunter, there are better VPN options out there, such as Surfshark. Or, if you’re looking for a premium VPN service, NordVPN will provide better service for a reasonable price.

BulletVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

A VPN Alternative

While BulletVPN offers above-average VPN protection, there are better values available in the VPN industry. I strongly suggest that users in search of a reliable VPN provider look elsewhere for their online security features and privacy needs. Below, you’ll find information about two providers I recommend looking at.

NordVPN

My #1 option for all-around optimal VPN protection is NordVPN. I have subjected this provider to strenuous testing, and it has proven itself to be a top-notch VPN provider.

While the provider’s asking price is similar to BulletVPN’s, it provides a much better return on investment.

First off, NordVPN’s global server network is one of the largest in the VPN industry. The provider has a global network of 5,600+ servers stationed in 60+ countries, covering most of the globe. This offers access to geo-blocked content that not many VPN providers can offer.

No matter which device is your favorite or most used, there is an excellent chance that NordVPN offers an app to support it. Windows, macOS (with native M1/M2 Mac support), iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, Linux, and Android TV apps are available. Browser extensions are available to protect your Chrome, Edge, and Firefox browsing sessions, as is compatibility with numerous router makes and models.

All of those devices will benefit from some of the fastest connections in the industry. NordVPN’s download speeds came in at an average of 196.4 Mbps in my recent connection speed time trials. The provider’s no data-caps-ever and unthrottled connection speeds provide all the speed you need for all of your favorite online activities.

Those fast connections are protected by military-grade encryption, a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and other protections. The provider offers the industry-standard OpenVPN connection protocol, as well as its own NordLynx protocol, which is based on the open-source WireGuard protocol.

The service’s CyberSec protection blocks malware-infected websites, botnets, and ads. Its Double VPN feature can be used to route your connection through twin servers to double up on anonymity.

NordVPN also offers optimal privacy protection thanks to its no-server-logs policy and a cryptocurrency payments option.

NordVPN is building an owned-and-operated server network, keeping third-party contractors away from your personal information. Plus, all NordVPN servers are run 100% from volatile RAM, meaning no data is ever written to a physical hard drive or SSD. This ensures that all data is completely and securely erased when a NordVPN server is shutdown, restarted, or unplugged from the wall.

Surfshark

Surfshark is my top VPN recommendation for users on a tight budget. The provider’s comprehensive VPN protection comes for a reasonable price.

The provider delivers fast, well-protected connections, delivering average download speeds of 188.8 Mbps in my most recent connection speed tests. No data caps or connection throttling to deal with when using Surfshark.

All Surfshark-provided connections are protected with military-grade encryption, a kill switch, and DNS and IP leak prevention. The provider uses the WireGuard, IKEv2/IPSec, and OpenVPN connection protocols.

The provider saves no user logs of any type on its servers, meaning your online travels are not monitored and can’t be analyzed. Your payment privacy is also protected, thanks to Surfshark’s cryptocurrency subscription payment option. Surfshark in 2022 joined the growing number of VPN providers that run their servers only from volatile RAM, writing no data to a hard drive or SSD. All data is completely and securely wiped from the provider’s servers when they are rebooted or shut down.

Surfshark’s native app support offers apps for Android, Android TV, Linux, Windows, iOS, Amazon Fire TV, and macOS (with native Apple Silicon support). Browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox browser platforms are also available. Support for multiple router makes and models is also available.

This provider offers budget-friendly pricing on its one or two-year subscription options.

BulletVPN FAQs

Is BulletVPN a Good Buy?

While BulletVPN offers discounted subscription rates for customers that opt for long-term commitments, there are certainly better deals available from VPN providers that offer more features for the same or a lower price.

Does BulletVPN Offer a Free Trial?

BulletVPN offers a 24-hour free trial if you sign up for the service in the Android app. You can also request a free trial directly from BulletVPN support.

I'm Not Happy With BulletVPN, Can I Get a Refund?

BulletVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. Simply cancel your account and request a refund from BulletVPN customer support within 30 days of your initial subscription purchase.

Why Can’t I Just Use a Free VPN?

While a free VPN may be attractive, I can almost guarantee that users that need VPN protection on a regular basis are not going to be satisfied with the free VPN experience.

First off, free VPNs are not private. Sans fee VPNs are known to log their users’ online travels, and then sell that collected information to advertisers and other interested parties. Other freebie VPNs have been caught inserting unwanted ads and tracking cookies into their customers’ browser sessions.

Last but not least, free VPNs usually both throttle their users’ connection bandwidth, while also imposing daily or monthly data caps on their customers’ VPN usage.
