Keenow VPN Review & Test Results – Does It Measure Up in 2024?

In this review, I’ll take a look at how well the service accesses geo-blocked content, how well it protects your internet connection while it does that, and what type of speeds the provider delivers, and whether or not they’re fast enough for an enjoyable streaming experience. I’ll also take a look at its global server network and its support for popular connected devices.

I’ll then deliver my verdict on the provider and let you know if it’s worth spending your hard-earned money on. I’ll also tell you about possibly better VPN alternatives, like my top VPN provider, NordVPN.

My Verdict

Keenow offers solid VPN protection and reliable access to Netflix. Those are its good points. If you’re looking for a large global server network or always-fast connections, you’re going to be disappointed.

The provider’s global server network doesn’t quite measure up to many other VPN service providers, but I will say that it appears that Keenow is working to expand it, as my server and country count was higher than that of other reviews I’ve read. I counted 260+ servers in 48+ countries. That count may be different if you try it, which is not unusual, as many VPN providers’ server counts fluctuate on what seems like a daily basis.

The provider doesn’t do badly in the native app support department, providing apps for the most popular device platforms and VPN setup is fairly straightforward.

Keenow connections are protected using military-grade encryption and also offer kill switch (with auto-reconnect) and DNS leak protection. If you prefer a provider with more bells and whistles when it comes to protection, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

All of this adds up to Keenow offering adequate VPN service, but if you’re looking for optimal online protection or top-notch access to geo-blocked content nearly anywhere around the globe, there are better alternatives, such as NordVPN.

Features of Keenow

Keenow offers three subscription options, including one-month, six-month, and one-year options.

The provider does well in the native app support area, with offerings for the macOS, Windows, Android, Android TV, Amazon Fire, and iOS device platforms. The provider also offers instructions for setting up the service on Chrome OS devices and on various routers. No browser extensions are available.

You can manually set up Keenow’s Smart DNS service on game consoles, streaming boxes, etc.

The provider offers unlimited concurrent connections, which is refreshing. I wish more VPN service providers had this policy.

Banking-grade encryption does a good job of protecting your connections, and the provider also offers a kill switch (with auto-reconnect) and DNS leak protection.

Unfortunately, the provider’s apps do not offer any “extras” like the ad and tracker blocking or malware and phishing protection that the VPN CyberGhost does.

I will note that the Windows and Mac versions of the app offer a “stealth mode” for use in China. The Windows app also offers a one-click “virtual router” feature that allows you to share your PC’s VPN connection with other wireless devices. Kudos to Keenow for both of those features.

By my count, the provider currently has just 260+ VPN servers stationed in 48+ countries. This is disappointing as the provider does a good job of accessing streaming services, and the low country count means you’ll not get as much as you should out of your streaming subscriptions.

While Keenow allows P2P BitTorrenting on their network, they limit it to designated VPN servers stationed in New York and the Netherlands.

Don’t expect 24/7 customer support, as the provider does not offer live support chat, and offers only a support ticket form and a limited FAQ section. I will note that the provider does offer nicely detailed walkthroughs for how to set up the provider’s VPN and Smart DNS services on a wide variety of devices.

Streaming

If you’re like me, you use a VPN to access geo-blocked content from streaming sites around the globe. If you’re into this, you need a VPN provider that offers reliable access to as many streaming services as possible.

In the early days of the streaming and VPN industries, it was a relatively simple thing to find a VPN that could access most streaming services. Then, Netflix, Hulu, and all the rest caught on to this neat little trick and began blocking IP addresses that VPN customers were using.

Many VPN providers simply didn’t have the resources or willingness to play this game of virtual hide and seek. Luckily, there are still VPN services that are willing to quickly set up new IP addresses for their customers to use when a VPN blocks their IP addresses.

Keenow promotes itself as an optimal way to access multiple streaming sites.

Unfortunately, while the VPN provider does an admirable job of accessing geo-blocked streaming content, their limited global server coverage doesn’t allow their subscribers to get all that they could out of their streaming subscriptions.

Keenow provided reliable access to Netflix in the U.S., U.K. and Singapore. (Although Netflix insisted on showing me U.S. content when I was connected to a U.K. server.) U.S.-based Hulu happily served up its content when I was using Keenow’s U.S. servers.

I had some trouble with the provider’s U.K. VPN servers when attempting to view BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime Video content.

While many VPNs will load the BBC iPlayer website, but not enable video playback, the BBC iPlayer website simply would not even load when using Keenow. Meanwhile, Amazon Prime didn’t notify me that it had detected a VPN, it simply wouldn’t play any video, loading the player screen, but never playing the video.

U.S. and Singapore servers were a mixed bag when it came to Amazon Prime, as the U.S. servers provided reliable video playback from the service, but the VPN service was detected when using Singapore servers.

Security and Online Privacy

Keenow provides reliable protection for all of your online activities. However, if you’re looking for a load of “extras” in the protection column, like what CyberGhost and some other well-established VPN service providers offer, you’ll be disappointed.

Keenow offers military-grade encryption, a kill switch, DNS leak and IP leak prevention, and a stealth mode that you can use from inside restrictive countries like China. However, don’t expect to find any extras like ad and tracking blocking, or phishing and malware protection.

While Keenow does log the IP addresses of visitors to their public website, as well as the activity of those users on the site (pretty normal for most websites), it does not log any IP addresses or log any activity of users while connected to Keenow servers.

The provider also protects your payment privacy, as it offers a cryptocurrency payment option in addition to the usual PayPal and credit/debit card options.

The provider is based in Israel, which is not a member of any “eyes” alliances. (Although the Israeli government does have close ties to the United States.)

Keenow VPN Connection Speeds

While Keenow’s connection speeds provide more than enough speed for most online activities, I found the provider’s speeds to be all over the speedometer.

When testing connection speeds, my unprotected speeds on my Windows PC averaged at 433.25 Mbps. (I have a one gigabit fiber internet connection.) I connected to three different VPN servers at three different times of the day, and saw protected speeds averaging 55.22 Mbps. Upload speeds took a bigger hit.

I should also note that protected speeds fluctuated wildly, from a high of 91.44 Mbps (U.S.) to a low of .016 Mbps (Singapore).

On average, Keenow-protected connections can easily handle streaming video, sharing and downloading of small files, and more. If you’re thinking of using it to enter a geo-blocked online gaming arena, you’ll probably want to take advantage of the provider’s money-back guarantee to give it a try, as ping numbers increased significantly when using Keenow servers.

The provider does not inflict data caps or bandwidth throttling on its users.

Cost

Keenow offers three subscription lengths, offering discounts for longer subscription commitments.

The provider’s one-month option will cost the same as a large double burger meal combo at your favorite fast food joint, while the six-month option knocks three bucks off of that per month and the year-long option takes another dollar off of that.

The provider offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for their annual plan, but only seven days for the monthly plan.

While the provider’s cost of admission is not outrageous, there are much better deals available. For the budget-minded among us, I suggest taking NordVPN for a test drive.
