How to Change Country in Amazon Prime Video

Are you looking to get all you can out of your Amazon Prime Video subscription? In this article, I walk you through changing your location, no matter where you are.

If you’re like me, you want to get as much value as possible out of your Amazon Prime Video subscription. For me, this includes being able to explore the content that is available to Amazon Prime members in other parts of the world.

But, how can you do that, when Amazon actively geo-blocks its content in other countries?

In this article, I’ll explain how Amazon blocks you from viewing content from other countries, and also show you how you can use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to change your country and view Amazon Prime Video films and TV shows from around the globe. I’ll also tell you how to troubleshoot common issues you may encounter.

Amazon Prime Video and other streaming services geo-restrict their content due to the agreements they sign with television and film producers. These contracts restrict the availability of the content to specific countries, meaning users outside of those countries do not usually have access to those content libraries.

This means that users from outside of the U.K. who attempt to view U.K.-only Amazon Prime Video content will be greeted with a message that tells them that “This title isn’t available in your location.”

In order to access Amazon Prime Video in a foreign country, you’ll need to take advantage of the features that a Virtual Private Network (VPN) offers.

A VPN allows you to route your internet connection through a server located in another country. This hides your actual location, making it appear to the rest of the internet that you are connecting from inside of the other country.

A VPN also has other advantages, as it encrypts your internet connection, hiding your online travels from Nosy Nellies, such as the government, hackers and even your Internet Service Provider.

It should be noted that Amazon Prime Video is actively on the lookout for VPN users who attempt to access its content library, and blocks any IP addresses that belong to VPNs from accessing its content.

This means that you may see an error message along the lines of “Your device is connected to the internet using a VPN or proxy service. Please disable it and try again.”

While this is frustrating, you can avoid this issue by using a reliable VPN provider that has the ability to evade Prime Video roadblocks, restoring your access to your favorite films and shows.

In this article, I’ll tell you how to change your country and watch content from other countries without needing to physically visit those countries. I’ll also clue you in on which VPN provides the most reliable access to Amazon Prime Video and other streaming sites.

You can’t choose just any VPN for changing your Amazon Prime Video location. Some VPNs aren’t able to unblock Amazon Prime Video at all. So, I had to do some research to find the best one.

NordVPN is my top pick for viewing Amazon Prime Video shows and films from other countries. The provider also does an excellent job of providing access to other geo-blocked services and sites in other countries around the globe.

The provider boasts an impressive global server network that currently includes 5,200+ servers stationed in 60 countries around the globe. (Be advised, a provider’s server count can vary from day to day.) This extensive global server network provides access to content around most of the world.

The HD and 4K content that Amazon Prime Video streams requires fast download speeds, so it’s important to find a VPN that does not overly slow down your connection speeds. NordVPN provides some of the fastest download speeds in the VPN industry. The provider never cuts your viewing binges short by imposing data caps or by throttling your speeds.

All of those fast connections are protected with military-grade 256-bit AES encryption, automatic kill switch protection and IP/DNS leak prevention. NordVPN’s NordLynx protocol is designed to provide improved security and performance. Multi-factor authentication is also available to confirm your NordVPN account credentials when you log in.

Also, NordVPN is in the process of migrating its entire server network to a totally proprietary model. That means that third-party contractors will no longer have access to customers’ personal information.

Those servers are no-logs servers, and the provider also accepts cryptocurrency to help protect your privacy. All NordVPN servers are run directly from RAM, with no data being written to a physical hard drive. This allows all data to be securely wiped from the server whenever it is rebooted.

Amazon Prime Video is available on most popular connected devices. NordVPN offers native app support for the Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, Linux and Android TV device platforms. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are available for your in-browser viewing pleasure.

The provider allows up to 6 concurrent connections on a single account. If you need to connect more devices on your home WiFi network, you can take advantage of the provider’s extensive router compatibility.

NordVPN offers a SmartDNS service that allows your streaming set-top boxes, smart TVs and game consoles to benefit from NordVPN’s geo-blocked content accessing abilities. A gentle reminder: A smart DNS service does not encrypt your connection like a VPN can.

The provider’s customer support options include always-available live chat, email support and a searchable support and troubleshooting library.

How to Change Your Country and Watch Amazon Prime Video From Anywhere

Amazon allows customers to change the region associated with their accounts by entering an address associated with the new region. Altering this changes the country used for your entire account, including which store you use to shop for and purchase items. (You don’t have to use a VPN to do this.)

Changing your account region isn’t necessary to unblock Amazon Prime Video content. Instead, as long as you’re connected to a VPN server in your country of choice that can unblock Prime Video, you’ll have access to that country’s library, even if your account region is set to another country.

However, if you do ever want to change your region for shopping purposes, it takes just a few clicks. While you’re logged in to your Amazon account, do the following:

  • Click the flag just to the right of the search box at the top of the Amazon home page. This will take you to the Country/Region page.
  • Click the down arrow next to the right of the country’s name.
  • Select the country you wish to change to.
  • Click the “Go to Website” button and the new country’s site will open in a new browser tab.

How to Unblock Amazon Prime Video With a VPN

It only takes a few straightforward steps to watch Amazon Prime Video content from other countries. Here’s how to change your country in Amazon Prime Video:

  1. Sign up with your VPN service provider of choice. While I strongly recommend NordVPN, I’ve also had success unblocking Amazon Prime Video in various countries with these reliable alternative VPNs: Surfshark, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and PrivateVPN.
  2. Download and install the provider’s app on your computer.
  3. Connect to a server in the country where you want to sample the content catalog.
  4. Log in to your Amazon Prime Video account in your computer’s browser.
  5. Search for your favorite content.
  6. Click the “Watch Now” button and enjoy your movie or TV series.

The above steps should allow you to access content in Amazon Prime Video’s standard content library.  If you decide to purchase additional content, you will need to set up a payment method based in the other country. Or, you can purchase an Amazon gift card and use that to make the payment.

Can I Unblock Amazon Prime Video on All of My Devices?

Sadly, during my testing, I found that while Amazon Prime video allows you to view streaming content on a mobile device, it is limited to the content that is available in the country you signed up in.

Amazon doesn’t disclose how it determines a viewer’s location on a mobile device. It may use your device’s GPS radio to determine its actual location, or perhaps it keys off of your payment method’s country of origin. Either way, you’ll be able to watch some content, but not all of it.

You can try to get around a GPS-based blockade by spoofing your GPS location on your mobile device. Apps are available in the Google Play Store for Android devices (search for “GPS Spoofing” or something similar). However, you’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone and load a third-party GPS spoofing app from a jailbreak app store.

Will a Free VPN Unblock Amazon Prime Video?

There are certainly a great many “free” VPNs out there, and free is certainly an attractive price.

However, you’ll soon find out that free VPNs are not a good idea for accessing Amazon Prime Video content (or for conducting any other online activity, for that matter).

First of all, free VPNs usually provide throttled connections and limit your usage with daily or monthly data caps. They do this to reserve bandwidth for their paying customers. Slow connections and data caps are not compatible with streaming video. Both HD and 4K video requires fast connections and can quickly eat up a data allotment.

Also, you may have to wait for a while to connect to a free VPN server, only then to find that you’re either limited to a small number of server locations or that you’re not given a server choice but instead are automatically connected to a server of the provider’s choosing. And that may or may not be the country housing your favorite content.

Privacy is also lacking when using a free VPN. Free VPNs make their money by tracking their users’ online travels, then selling that valuable information to advertisers and others that are willing to pay for the info. Some VPNs have even been found to be inserting unwanted ads and tracking cookies into their free users’ browser sessions.

None of this sounds like an “entertaining” (or safe) way to access Amazon Prime Video, does it?

What Else Can a VPN Do For Me?

A Virtual Private Network is a service of many talents. It offers a number of features that can protect your online security and privacy, while also providing access to geo-blocked content in many parts of the globe.

As we’ve seen in this article, a VPN provides access to geo-blocked content around the globe. It does this by giving you an IP address from a selected country, making it appear to the rest of the internet that you and your device are connecting from that country, opening up access to content intended for that country.

A VPN also encrypts your internet connection, ensuring that Nosy Nellies like governments, hackers and even your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can’t monitor your online activities.

Encrypted protection comes in especially handy for users of public WiFi hotspots like those found at coffee shops, restaurants, airports and other public areas. Public WiFi hotspots are usually unprotected. While this makes it easier to connect, it also leaves hotspot users open to being monitored by other users, like that hacker at the next table. No, don’t look, they’ll know we’re on to them!

Connection encryption also prevents your ISP from logging your online travels, then selling that information to advertisers and other nosy parties. ISPs have also been caught throttling or blocking their users’ connections simply because they’re engaging in “unapproved” activities, like streaming from certain websites or sharing files.
