Online users who either reside in Tanzania or those visiting the country should be aware that one could rate the current state of the internet in the East African country as somewhat less than free, meaning there are several sites that are actively blocked, along with some social networks, messaging apps, and even some Virtual Private Network (VPN) providers.
While video streaming services like Netflix are available in Tanzania, the content available on the localized versions of streaming services is much different from that available in other countries. Plus, some streaming sites – like Hulu in the U.S. and BBC iPlayer in the U.K. – restrict access to their content to residents of their home countries.
Can A VPN Keep My Online Activity Undercover?
Keeping your internet activities undercover from the government, Internet Service Providers and hackers, while also gaining access to content located in other countries, are both excellent reasons why Tanzanian internet users should investigate the benefits that a VPN offers.
A VPN encases your internet connection in a tunnel of impenetrable encryption to hide your online travels. It also temporarily assigns a fresh IP address to your connected device, making it appear as if you are connecting from a different country, enabling access to geo-blocked content that is normally only available in that particular country.
In this article, I’ll share information about the top seven VPN service providers that work reliably in Tanzania, providing the best online protection and enhancement for your online activities.
How to Use a VPN in Tanzania
It’s easy to use a VPN from inside Tanzania. Just follow these five simple steps:
- Subscribe to a VPN provider. (NordVPN is my recommendation.)
- Install your favorite provider’s app(s) on your device(s).
- Sign in on the app.
- Select a nearby VPN server to protect your internet activities while inside the country. To access content located in another part of the world, select a server in the country of your choice.
- Enjoy your newfound internet freedom and content access!
Please note: The Tanzanian government has been known to block some VPNs. While all of the VPNs on this list were known to currently work from inside the country, things could change without notice. Check with the VPN you’re considering to make sure the provider isn’t having any issues in the country.
Also, if you’re visiting Tanzania, subscribe and download the app of your provider before entering the country, just in case the provider’s website is blocked inside Tanzanian borders.
Best VPN Service Providers for Tanzania
The following seven VPN services offer the best online protection and enhancement for your online travels while inside Tanzanian borders.
My best VPNs for Tanzania:
- NordVPN: Top VPN for Tanzania. Tanzania internet users would do quite well to subscribe to NordVPN. The provider’s comprehensive online security and privacy protections keep your online travels undercover, while its large global server network provides fast connections to geo-blocked content around the world. Comes with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

- ExpressVPN: Premium VPN pick. This well-known provider has an impressive record of offering premium services, albeit at a premium price. The provider boasts a truly large global server network that delivers excellent protection and speed for your online travels.
- CyberGhost: Good choice for VPN rookies. Rookie VPN users will appreciate this easy-to-use yet powerful VPN provider. Simple apps provide reliable access to a huge global server network, including servers that are optimized for streaming and file sharing.
- Private Internet Access (PIA): Reliable VPN protection. PIA’s well-protected, fast connections provide reliable online protection, as well as access to geo-controlled content around the globe.
- PrivateVPN: Small but powerful. Tiny this provider’s global server network may be when compared to the other VPNs on this list. However, the provider owns and operates all of its servers, adding privacy by keeping third-party operators away from your personal info. A Stealth VPN feature also disguises your VPN activity as normal browser traffic.
- Atlas VPN: Unlimited protected internet access. This provider’s global server network is the second smallest on this list. However, it does allow users to simultaneously connect as many devices as they’d like.
When ranking the top seven VPN service providers for Tanzania, I considered the following factors:
- Provider works from inside Tanzania
- Global server locations (No VPNs on this list have servers inside of Tanzania)
- Security and user privacy protections
- Download speeds
- Device support
- Customer support offerings
If you’d like to learn more about the criteria I used, then make sure you take a look at the testing methodology section found later in this article.

It has an impressive global server network, boasting more than 3,200 servers in 65+ countries. All of the provider’s servers are run 100% from RAM, with no data ever being written to a physical hard drive. This ensures that all data is completely wiped from the server whenever it is rebooted.

ExpressVPN protects its customers’ connections with banking-grade 256-bit AES encryption, an automatic kill switch, and IPv6 and DNS leak protection. The provider’s Lightway protocol is designed to provide improved security and performance.
A strict no-server-logs policy and a Bitcoin subscription payment option have things covered on the privacy end of things. Extra privacy protection comes from the provider’s “TrustedServer” technology, which runs all server operations only from RAM, never writing any type of data to the hard drive. That means all server data is totally wiped whenever the server is rebooted.
The provider’s download speeds are some of the fastest around, often competing for the top spot in my connection speed testing. ExpressVPN connections provide more than enough bandwidth for HD streaming, online gaming, and file sharing. Unlimited bandwidth and data are a staple.
ExpressVPN native app support includes offerings for Amazon Fire, Android, Android TV, iOS, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and Windows device platforms. Browser sessions are kept private thanks to the provider’s Chrome, Edge, and Firefox extensions.
The provider’s comprehensive router compatibility was recently improved, as the company recently updated its router firmware, improving its user interface and performance.

Users with little to no experience with VPN apps, or those in search of an easy-to-use way to protect their connections, will appreciate CyberGhost’s VPN offering.
CyberGhost’s global server network is one of the most impressive networks in the VPN industry. The provider has 8,900+ servers located in 90+ countries around the globe. That count includes a large number of servers that are optimized for streaming and sharing files.
Online security from the provider includes banking-level 256-bit AES encryption, an automatic kill switch, and DNS and IPv6 leak prevention. Also available is the ability to block both ads and trackers, and the service can also force web servers to serve up secure versions of their pages, if available.
CyberGhost recently added new security features, including a password manager, antivirus protection, and a feature to scan your device for outdated and vulnerable apps. A new ID Guard feature alerts you if your email address was revealed in a data breach.
A strict no-logs policy and an acceptance of Bitcoin as a subscription payment have things covered on the privacy end of things.
CyberGhost’s download speeds are also impressive, easily handling gaming, streaming HD video, and conducting any other online pastimes you might enjoy. Unlimited bandwidth and data are included as part of the deal.
Easy-to-use app offerings include options for Amazon Fire, Android, Android TV, iOS, macOS, Linux, and Windows platforms. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions are available, as is compatibility with numerous routers.
Up to seven devices can connect at once on a single account.
The provider also offers a password manager, alerts when your email is exposed in a data breach, virus and malware protection for Windows, and much more.

5. Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access (PIA) delivers well-protected fast access to geo-protected content in many locations around the globe.
The PIA global server network is not the largest on this list. That said, 3,300+ servers located in 80+ countries is a respectable-sized network. The provider’s network provides reliable access to content around the globe.
Your online travels are kept incognito, thanks to the provider’s use of banking-grade encryption, IP/DNS leak prevention, and kill-switch protection. Ads, trackers, malware, and malicious websites can also be blocked.
The provider’s strict no-user logs policy ensures that there are no records kept of your online activities while connected to PIA’s servers. Meanwhile, a cryptocurrency payment option keeps your payment information fully incognito if you subscribe using a disposable email address.
PIA’s connection speeds are certainly not the fastest on this list. However, the provider’s connection speeds make it a great choice for popular online activities. No data caps or bandwidth limitations ever spoil your fun.
The provider’s native app support includes options for Android, Android TV, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux device platforms. Chrome, Opera, and Firefox browser extensions are also available, as is compatibility with multiple router makes and models.
Users can simultaneously connect up to 10 devices to PIA servers.
PIA’s always-available customer support options include live chat, a trouble ticket form, and a searchable support library.
- Supports most popular connected devices
- Good global server coverage
- Comprehensive online security and privacy
- No streaming-enhanced servers
- Doesn’t work well in some restrictive regions
RELIABLE VPN PROTECTION FOR TANZANIA:The Private Internet Access server network covers much of the globe, providing fast, well-protected connections to content around the world. The provider also offers comprehensive security and privacy protections. A 30-day money-back guarantee is available.
Read my full review of Private Internet Access.
PrivateVPN comes up a bit short in its global server network and its app support, but it makes up for it with its other features.
200+ servers well-spread among nearly 65 countries means PrivateVPN definitely has the most lacking network coverage of any provider on this list.
However, all of those servers provide excellent online security thanks to the provider’s use of government-grade 256-bit AES encryption, an automatic kill switch, and IPv6 and DNS leak prevention. Its proprietary “Stealth VPN” option keeps your VPN activity undercover as it disguises it as normal browser activity, keeping it out of sight from overly restrictive countries.
The provider’s no-server-logs policy and Bitcoin subscription payment option cover things in the privacy department.
PrivateVPN’s fast download speeds are ideal for HD streaming, fast-moving online games, and file sharing. No data caps or bandwidth limitations get in the way of your online enjoyment.
App support is limited to the four most popular platforms, including Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows devices. Manual setup instructions are available for Linux devices. No browser extensions are to be had, but PrivateVPN is compatible with select WiFi routers.
Up to 10 devices can connect at once on the same set of login credentials.
While the provider says that its support chat feature is available around the clock, I have often found the chat balloon to be red, which means no one is available to chat. However, email support and an FAQ help section are always available.
- Stealth VPN feature to disguise your VPN connection
- Speedy downloads
- Up to 10 concurrent connections
- Global server network needs a bump
- Lacks optimal app support
“STEALTH” VPN CONNECTIONS:PrivateVPN’s Stealth VPN option keeps your VPN usage hidden, while its speedy connections offer excellent security and privacy for all of your online activities. The provider’s global server network is a bit lacking, but it will likely be acceptable for many users’ needs. A 30-day money-back guarantee is available.

7. Atlas VPN
Atlas VPN’s fast, well-protected connections provide reliable access to content in many countries around the world.
The provider’s global server network (750+ servers in 40+ countries) is certainly not the largest in the industry. However, the network provides reliable, well-protected access to geo-fenced content wherever it has servers located.
The provider’s fast connection speeds provide more than enough bandwidth for all of your favorite online activities. Never a data cap or bandwidth throttling to deal with at this provider.
Atlas VPN protects all of its customer’s connections with government-grade encryption, a kill switch, and other protective features. The provider’s Safebrowse and Safebrowse Plus protection keeps you protected against online risks, including unwanted ads.
No usage logs are ever saved, meaning no one can track you and your online travels. Unfortunately, the provider does not accept cryptocurrency as a subscription payment.
Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV apps are available. While there is no support for Linux, browsers, or routers, Atlas says all three features are on the way.
A user can simultaneously connect as many devices as they’d like to Atlas VPN servers.
Live chat is for paying customers only. Happily, email support, a contact form, and a support library are available to all.
- Fast, protected connections for popular devices
- Dependable access to geo-protected content

- Global server network needs a bump

Methodology for Assessing VPNs for Tanzania
Tanzanians in search of quality online security and privacy will want to always carefully consider all of the features offered by the VPN services that are available in their region of the world.
These are the factors you should consider when choosing a VPN for Tanzania:
- Connection speed: A provider’s connection speed directly affects your enjoyment of your online activities. All of the VPNs on this list offer fast connections, which I verify on a regular basis through speed tests.
- Server network: Any VPN worth your consideration should have servers stationed in as many countries as possible, while having a large number of servers in each country. This will provide access to content around the globe, while also helping to prevent any individual server from being hit with an overload of users (so your performance will be better).
- Value: Avoid spending a large amount of money on any VPN that doesn’t offer good value for the money. Each VPN on my list is priced in line with the services it offers.
- Ease of use: Easy-to-use apps mean you won’t waste time fiddling with a plethora of settings that you might not understand. The provider should also make apps available for as many popular platforms as possible. All of the VPNs on my list provide easy-to-use apps.
- Security and privacy: If you’re connected to the internet, you’re in danger. And let’s face it, you’re always connected to the internet. Providers should, at a minimum, offer banking-grade encryption, an automatic kill switch, and DNS/IP leak protection. A no-server-logs policy is also a must to ensure that there will be no evidence available to reveal your online activities.
- Streaming: Check that a VPN provides reliable access to geo-blocked streaming services, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and other popular streaming services.

Why Not Use a Free VPN in Tanzania?
Using a free VPN is never a good idea. But, when you’re connecting to the internet from inside a restrictive country like Tanzania, that adage is even more true.
By using a free VPN, you’ll be putting your privacy at risk, while also subjecting yourself to a less than enjoyable online experience.
Your privacy is at risk because many free VPNs pay the bills by logging their users’ online activities, then selling that information to advertisers or anybody else that is willing to pay for it.
Plus, some freebie providers will insert tracking cookies and ads into their users’ browser sessions. And guess what? Those cookies keep on tracking you, even after you disconnect from the provider’s servers.
As for your online enjoyment, you’ll find that some free VPNs will tell you to cool your heels to wait for a connection to one of the limited number of their servers.
Once you’re allowed to connect, you’ll either be faced with a limited number of server locations to choose from or be automatically connected to a server of the provider’s choice.
Once connected, your connection speeds are likely to drop by a considerable amount, and you’ll find your usage limited by daily or monthly data caps. (VPNs want to preserve most of their bandwidth for use by their paying customers.)
Spend a few shillings per month on a quality VPN – you’ll be better protected and much happier with your online experience. Consider NordVPN or Surfshark, which are budget-priced VPNs.
What Are the Additional Advantages of Using a VPN?
A VPN encases your internet connection in a virtual tunnel of encryption, preventing hackers, the government, and even your Internet Service Provider (ISP) from monitoring and recording your online activities.
Hackers track you because they want to steal your personal info.
The government tracks you because they’re the government, they’re just naturally nosy about the online activities of their “subjects.”
ISPs track your online activities because they can sell the info they harvest to advertisers and other nosy types.
Plus, some ISPs will block or throttle your internet connection if they notice you streaming from “unapproved” sources or see you sharing files (even if they’re not copyrighted materials).
A VPN’s encryption blocks these nosy folks from tracking your online activities, meaning there is no benefit in tracking you if you’re using a reliable VPN.
If you use an unprotected public WiFi hotspot, such as those found in public locations like hotels, coffee shops, and more, your online travels are left open to tracking, as many hotspots are not encrypted. The lack of encryption makes it easier for hackers to monitor you while you’re connected. A VPN’s encryption will prevent this.
A VPN also provides access to geo-blocked content from other countries.
A VPN temporarily assigns a fresh IP address to your connected device. When the VPN server you select is located in another country, the new IP address makes it appear to the rest of the internet that you and your device are located in that country. This provides access to geo-blocked content in that country.
Internet users in Tanzania and other locations around the world will appreciate a Virtual Private Network’s ability to both protect and enhance all of their online activities.
My #1 choice for top-notch VPN protection is NordVPN, which provides comprehensive service in every category.
NordVPN’s large global server network provides reliable access to geo-blocked content around the globe. The provider’s support for popular device platforms keeps your devices’ internet connections protected, while its fast speeds improve your online experience. The provider’s 24/7 customer support is always available when you need it.
For more information or to purchase a subscription, visit the NordVPN website.
Tanzanian VPN FAQs
Why Do I Need to Use a VPN in Tanzania?
There are multiple reasons to use a VPN in Tanzania. The Tanzanian government censors some online content and services, including social networks. Plus, the government there has been known to monitor citizens’ online travels. You’ll also miss out on geo-controlled content, like streaming services, if you don’t use a VPN. Plus, a VPN protects you from bad actors that want to monitor your online activities and steal personal and business info.
Are VPNs Legal in Tanzania?
While the Tanzanian government does censor citizens’ online access and has attempted to block VPN access to social networks, it is not illegal to use a VPN in the country. That said, I am not a lawyer, and none of what I’ve written should be considered as legal advice.
