If you’re outside of Turkey for any reason – for a vacation, business trip or because you live abroad as an expat – Turkish content will be unavailable to you.
That is, unless you use a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which can bust through virtual roadblocks and give you access to Turkish content from anywhere around the globe.
The way they do this is by giving you a Turkish IP address.
An IP address is what identifies your device on the internet, letting other devices on the internet know where a request came from and where a response needs to go. IP addresses vary by country, so you’ll automatically have an IP address from whichever country you’re located in, revealing your physical location.
The way around this is to use a VPN provider. When you connect to the VPN provider’s servers in Turkey, they’ll hide your true IP address and give you a new (temporary) one in Turkey.
You could be in Germany, France, Pakistan, Peru, Australia, anywhere. All that the internet will see is your Turkish IP address, and Turkish content providers will open their doors to you and let you access all of the Turkish content you can handle.
In this article, I review the best 5 VPN providers to use to get a real IP address in Turkey.
How to Get an IP Address in Turkey
Getting an IP address in Turkey using a VPN isn’t difficult. Just follow the simple steps below.
- Buy a subscription to a VPN service (NordVPN is my #1 pick).
- Install the provider’s app(s) on your device(s).
- Find a server in Turkey and connect to it.
- Visit a Turkish site or service that you normally can’t access.

If you find that you don’t want to continue with your subscription before that trial period has elapsed, simply cancel your subscription for a full, no-questions-asked refund.

Privacy protections are also complete, as the provider saves no logs of your VPN usage and accepts Bitcoin as a private payment method.
NordVPN provides rather easy-to-use apps for the Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, macOS, Amazon Fire and Android TV device platforms. Chrome and Firefox browser extensions protect your browsing sessions, and there’s plenty of router support.
NordVPN’s SmartDNS service allows devices such as gaming consoles, smart TVs and other set-top boxes to access international streaming content like Turkish TV, even though they’re incompatible with VPN apps. Take note, though, that the service doesn’t encrypt your internet connection.
You can connect up to 6 devices concurrently to the provider’s server locations on one set of login credentials.
No matter what kind of question you may have for customer support, agents are always available via 24/7 live support chat. You can also contact customer support through email. A searchable support library is also always there to peruse.

Why Are International Users Banned From Some Turkish Websites and Services?
You may have a subscription to a Turkish streaming service, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything if you’re outside of Turkey. The streaming content will be unavailable.
Streaming services are not the prime culprit, however. You have to take a look at the TV and movie studios that stipulate in their contracts that only Turkish residents can access the TV and movie content.
TV and movie studios do this so that they can make more money. If anyone in the world could access the content they want in one location, with no regional restrictions in place, the TV and movie producers couldn’t make more profit by selling and reselling their content to different providers in different countries.
This isn’t completely unreasonable, but it certainly makes for a frustrating situation. And TV and movie streaming isn’t the end of the story.
Music streaming content, gaming servers and content, and other sites and services are also restricted by geo-blockades.
Financial institutions also limit their services by location. This is because, if you ordinarily access your bank account from one place, it’s suspicious when you start accessing it from another country. So, they’ll normally block your access completely, under the impression that some unauthorized person is trying to steal from you.
To combat this, you can use a VPN service to make you appear to still be in the original country, Turkey, while accessing your account. But it’s still a good idea to let your financial institution know when you’re exiting the country, just to be safe.
How Is Content Geographically Blocked?
It all comes down to your IP address.
Every internet-connected device has an IP address. This IP address is what identifies your device on the internet, letting other devices know where a request came from and where a response needs to go.
In this way, it acts a lot like a home address. Home addresses let the postal service know where mail came from and where it needs to go. An IP address does the same, but with internet traffic requests and responses.
Because IP addresses differ from country to country, your device’s IP address reveals your physical location.
Streaming providers take one look at your IP address, and if it’s not located in the right place, will block your access out of hand, leaving you out in the cold.
How Can I Access Blocked Turkish Content From Overseas?
These virtual blockades stand no chance against a good Virtual Private Network (VPN).
When you connect to a VPN provider’s servers in Turkey, they’ll give you a Turkish IP address, fooling content providers into thinking you’re really in Turkey, whether you’re in the next country over or the next continent over.
You could be in Germany, the U.S., Japan, India, even China – it doesn’t matter. With that new (temporary) Turkish IP address, geo-blocked content will be at your fingertips.
To get access to geo-blocked Turkish content from abroad, follow the steps below.
- Subscribe to your VPN provider of choice (I suggest NordVPN).
- Log into the service, then download and install the correct app(s) for your device(s).
- Start up the app and connect to a server in Turkey.
- Visit the Turkish site or service you’re interested in.
- Hello, Turkish content!
What Else Can a VPN Do?
Not only are VPNs formidable when it comes to unblocking regional content, they also do a multitude of other things.
The main thing that a VPN does is it encrypts your internet connection. Just like how a train tunnel hides a train when it passes through, a VPN’s tunnel of encryption hides your online activities while inside.
Internet Service Providers (ISPs), hackers and even the Turkish government can’t crack that strong encryption, keeping your internet travels safe and sound from monitoring or interference.
Another thing that this encryption does is prevent hackers and other nosy third parties from spying on your internet activities while on a public WiFi hotspot. Because public WiFi hotspots lack much security, hackers love to “investigate” the personal, business and financial information of users. A VPN’s encryption keeps them from doing this.
ISP throttling is also something you won’t have to worry about. ISPs like to throttle your connection speeds when you do something they don’t like, like torrenting or streaming from certain “unapproved” websites. However, when you use a VPN, the encryption will keep the ISP from knowing what you’re up to, therefore preventing throttling.
Can I Use a Free VPN Provider to Gain Access to Turkish Content?
Free VPN providers are a hazard to your online health, and you should steer clear of them.
The first thing you should know about free VPN providers is that they often make you wait in a queue before allowing you to connect to their servers. Who knows how long this will take? Finally, when you are allowed to connect, you’ll have a paltry list of servers to choose from, if you have any choice in the matter.
You’re unlikely to find servers in Turkey. And if there are no Turkish servers, you’re out of luck.
You can also expect to have your speeds throttled when you use a freebie VPN, because free VPNs will throttle your speeds in order to save bandwidth for their paying customers. Daily or monthly data caps are also a staple of free VPNs.
Free VPNs do not score well when it comes to online privacy, either. Free VPNs usually make money from their free users by spying on their online activities and selling personal information to interested third parties, such as advertisers.
You’re also likely to find unwanted ads and tracking cookies inserted into your browsing sessions.
Paid VPN providers pose none of these problems, and some of them don’t cost much at all, like NordVPN and Surfshark. Avoid the trouble of free VPN providers and opt for a paid option.
When in search of a Turkish IP address, your best choice is undeniably NordVPN.
NordVPN offers a top-quality service at a more than reasonable price. Incredibly fast speeds, combined with a multitude of high-quality apps, complete security and privacy protection, and responsive customer support make NordVPN the top provider for getting an IP address in Turkey.
For more information or to purchase a subscription, visit the NordVPN website.
IP Address from Turkey FAQ
Is It Legal to Use an IP Address From a VPN Server in Turkey?
Yes, it’s legal to use a VPN to get an IP address in Turkey. So long as you’re not using a VPN in the commission of a crime, you’ll have no legal problems using a VPN in Turkey or using a VPN to gain a Turkish IP address.
Why Are VPN Providers Blocked From Operating From Istanbul?
It should be noted that, while NordVPN reports that VPNs have been banned in Turkey, it’s still not illegal to use one - you’ll just have a hard time accessing VPN websites while inside Turkey (which is why I always suggest signing up for a VPN and downloading its apps before entering any restrictive country, including Turkey).
The reason why VPNs have been blocked from operating in Istanbul is because the government is against websites that are critical of the Turkish government. Because of this, they’ve blocked many popular websites, such as certain search engines and social media sites.
Will a VPN Allow Me to Access Government-Censored Content From Turkey?
Yes, you can watch government-censored content while located in Turkey if you use a VPN. However, you can’t be connected to a VPN server in Turkey, as anything censored to a Turkish IP address will be censored even if you use a VPN. Connect to a VPN server in another country to gain access to content that’s censored in Turkey.
