Not just any VPN can provide reliable access to IP addresses (and content) located inside of Turkish borders. There are several key features to consider when picking a VPN for a Turkish IP address. They are as follows:

Look for providers with more than one server located in a single country, as multiple servers help to make sure that an individual server won’t be overloaded by too many users at once.

Why Are International Users Banned From Some Turkish Websites and Services?

You may have a subscription to a Turkish streaming service, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything if you’re outside of Turkey. The streaming content will be unavailable.

Streaming services are not the prime culprit, however. You have to take a look at the TV and movie studios that stipulate in their contracts that only Turkish residents can access the TV and movie content.

TV and movie studios do this so that they can make more money. If anyone in the world could access the content they want in one location, with no regional restrictions in place, the TV and movie producers couldn’t make more profit by selling and reselling their content to different providers in different countries.

This isn’t completely unreasonable, but it certainly makes for a frustrating situation. And TV and movie streaming isn’t the end of the story.

Music streaming content, gaming servers and content, and other sites and services are also restricted by geo-blockades.

Financial institutions also limit their services by location. This is because, if you ordinarily access your bank account from one place, it’s suspicious when you start accessing it from another country. So, they’ll normally block your access completely, under the impression that some unauthorized person is trying to steal from you.

To combat this, you can use a VPN service to make you appear to still be in the original country, Turkey, while accessing your account. But it’s still a good idea to let your financial institution know when you’re exiting the country, just to be safe.

How Is Content Geographically Blocked?

It all comes down to your IP address.

Every internet-connected device has an IP address. This IP address is what identifies your device on the internet, letting other devices know where a request came from and where a response needs to go.

In this way, it acts a lot like a home address. Home addresses let the postal service know where the mail came from and where it needs to go. An IP address does the same, but with internet traffic requests and responses.

Because IP addresses differ from country to country, your device’s IP address reveals your physical location.

Streaming providers take one look at your IP address, and if it’s not located in the right place, will block your access out of hand, leaving you out in the cold.

What Else Can a VPN Do?

Not only are VPNs formidable when it comes to unblocking regional content, they also do a multitude of other things.

The main thing that a VPN does is it encrypts your internet connection. Just like how a train tunnel hides a train when it passes through, a VPN’s tunnel of encryption hides your online activities while inside.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs), hackers, and even the Turkish government can’t crack that strong encryption, keeping your internet travels safe and sound from monitoring or interference.

Another thing that this encryption does is prevent hackers and other nosy third parties from spying on your internet activities while on a public WiFi hotspot. Because public WiFi hotspots lack much security, hackers love to “investigate” the personal, business, and financial information of users. A VPN’s encryption keeps them from doing this.

ISP throttling is also something you won’t have to worry about. ISPs like to throttle your connection speeds when you do something they don’t like, like torrenting or streaming from certain “unapproved” websites.
